The photography student at Rochester Institute of Technology — the son of ESPN's longtime college football writer — went missing on Feb. 22.

He was seen leaving his apartment on campus by classmates, and drove his SUV to the water's edge. The final eyewitness before Maisel's disappearance spotted the college junior at 8 p.m. that same night, near the lake house which has been owned by his family for over 15 years.

The next day, police found his car parked close to the pier.

"We called him at some point over the weekend, and didn't hear back from him but that wasn't unusual," his sportswriter father told the local paper Democrat & Chronicle. "He's not a talkative kid when you're in the same room with him."

Max's mother Meg Murray added on Feb. 26 to the paper: "We're praying very, very hard. This is the worst thing. We miss him and we can't wait to see him."

Several days later on Mar. 1, Ivan shared an update on the search progress with his 100,000-plus followers on Twitter, writing: "logic indicates that it will not end well."
