A rep for the actress spoke out Thursday to clear up confusion about what's behind the facial bruises.
Griffith, 52, had surgery to remove early-stage cancer from her face — thus leading to the black eye, her rep told the Associated Press Thursday. The very good news: the surgery was done early enough "to prevent further complications," the AP reports.

The Oscar-nominated actress is married to Antonio Banderas, with whom she has a daughter, Stella, 13. Griffith has two other children from previous relationships: Alexander Bauer, 24, and Dakota Johnson, 20 (Dakota's dad is actor Don Johnson).
