Melissa McCarthy spoke to Us Weekly exclusively about her love of fashion

The next Coco Chanel? Melissa McCarthy opened up to Us Weekly exclusively about her love of fashion, tracing her passion back to childhood ahead of the release of her new clothing line.

McCarthy, 44, found the time in her busy movie schedule to conceptualize the Melissa McCarthy Seven7 collection, which will be available in stores and online in August. The Spy actress was involved every step of the way, choosing to oversee everything from fabrics to cuts rather than hand the work off to her team.

"It's kind of the way I work," she told Us. "I think people thought maybe I wasn't serious, but I wanted to do this since I was in grade school. It's what I thought I was going to do for a living, so I take it very seriously and I truly love it."

"You make a decision, then it goes off, when it gets back you have 14 minutes to make another decision," she continued of the process. "It's a lot of waiting and rushing. And I really want to touch everything because I'm very tactile so at one point they were like, 'Well we can just approve it and send you pictures,' and I was like, 'No, I have to touch everything! I have to wear everything!' I want to wear everything so that I know at the end of the day like, 'This waistband is weird.' I don't want to put something out there and then realize like, 'That's really scratchy.'"

McCarthy's meticulous involvement in her line as she simultaneously promotes Spy and films Michelle Darnell and the upcoming Ghostbusters reboot leaves her with little time off.

"That's okay," she told Us of her whirlwind schedule. "I had about 15 years of downtime so I'm rested."

"Any second I'm off, I'm with my kids and my husband," added McCarthy, who has been married to frequent collaborator Ben Falcone for nearly 10 years. The hilarious actors share two children together: daughters Georgette, 5, and Vivian, 8. "We just appreciate the time we do get together because it's really something we value."
