Michael Phelps Is ‘Looking Forward’ to Spending Time With Son Boomer, Fiancee Nicole Johnson After Olympics

Time to settle down. Michael Phelps took home the gold medal (his 23rd!) in his final swimming relay race at the 2016 Rio Olympics on Saturday, August 13, marking the end of his legendary, decades-long career. But what’s next for the most decorated Olympian of all time?

“Hopefully I’m going to travel and work some, that’s probably what I’m planning after this,” the 31-year-old athlete told reporters at a press conference on Friday, August 12. “I’m really looking forward to seeing [my son] Boomer and [my fiancée] Nicole and my family. I have a bunch of people that came down to watch these games and I’d like to spend some time with them.”

The Olympics weren’t Phelps’ only recent milestone. He and Nicole Johnson are set to get married later this year. “I’m getting married at the end of the year and have a pretty busy schedule, a very good busy schedule,” he explained Friday of his forthcoming nuptials.

After taking home his final Olympic medal (and 28th career medal) on Saturday night, the competitive swimmer joked that he might let son Boomer, 3 months, take one of the coveted prizes to school one day in the future.

“I might let him take one for show-and-tell,” he said at a second press conference on Saturday. “I’m sure he’ll eventually take them over when I pass, but that’s a long time. But I’d probably give him one to take to show-and-tell. I might have to go with him and take every step with him when he goes and shares it.… I’m looking forward to seeing him and, the other night when I was on FaceTime, he was crying as soon as I called. I was kind of, like, just moving the medal around and his eyes just locked right on it. So he’s already eyeing them up.”

As for life with Johnson, 31, and Boomer? “I know Nicole and I are so excited to be the best parents we can be,” Phelps added Saturday. “Having the journey that I’ve gone through my whole life … it will just be awesome just to be a part of [Boomer’s] life every day and to see what I can help with or teach him. This is a new experience for me, and like I said, it’s something Nicole and I are very, very excited about.”
