Mindy Kaling is just like you. She puts her pants on one leg at a time. She tells all her friends she ate a salad for lunch when really she got a calzone. And she's got a playlist that's just Beyoncé's "Single Ladies" 35 times on repeat. That's because Mindy Kaling don't need a man. And neither do you.
"I don't need marriage," Kaling told Good Housekeeping. "I don't need anyone to take care of all my needs and desires. I can take care of them myself now."
Kaling also noted that she's single, but dating… though she seems to be doing it mostly for the clothes.
"If I could relive the first three months of courtship over and over for the rest of my life, I would," she confessed. "Especially in winter, who doesn't like a nice heavy seven-course meal with lots of alcohol, then making out when you're a little tipsy and taking a cab home to fall asleep in the clothes you wore on the date? Wait. Actually that was, like, my whole 20s. And it was very fun."
Any 20-something on a budget can certainly relate. Dating is a great way to get a free meal and, in the winter, a little warmth. Is it prostitution? Maybe. Is it also fun? Absolutely.
As for her famous exes, Kaling said she's not "in the friends-with-my-exes camp," but that her ex and former The Office co-star B.J. Novak will always have a place in her life.
"B.J. has the stamp for life as a friend," Kaling shared. "My mom loved him. He feels like family."
On the subject of her mother, who died of pancreatic cancer in 2012 and whose no-nonsense attitude partially inspired Kaling's Mindy Project character, the funny lady says she was her "soulmate." But as for an actual soulmate, that's going to have to wait.
"When I was younger, I wanted so badly to be married and have kids in a rush," she recalled. "I loved my parents' relationship. The way my father was with my mother when she was dying was so moving. It was such devotion. I don't know that that will happen for me, but I like it."
