Neil Patrick Harris Shares Wedding Photos, Says First Dance Was to Kelly Clarkson’s “Moment Like This”

Eyes may have been on George Clooney and Amal Alamuddin’s Venice nuptials this weekend, but Neil Patrick Harris reminded fans on Monday, Sept. 29, that Clooney wasn’t the only one to recently say “I do” in Italy.

The Gone Girl star, 41, stopped by The Late Show with David Letterman, and took the opportunity to share some photos from his own Italian wedding and to take a good-natured swipe at Clooney. Harris wed his longtime love, David Burtka, near Perugia on Saturday, Sept. 6.

“It was fun!” he told David Letterman, 67, of his wedding. “We’ve both been very busy — David and I — we were looking for a time that was appropriate. We didn’t want to have to do it just in a couple days and we wanted to do a destination wedding. Our first trip together was in Italy so that seemed fun.”

“We knew a friend of a friend of a dude who had a castle,” Harris added casually. “So we thought, ‘Okay, that’s fun!’ There were about 50 people… Elton John sang a few songs, which was super cool. He’s a friend and I didn’t expect that. That was overwhelming. And then he introduced our first dance, which was super fun.”

Imitating John’s British accent, Harris continued, “He said, ‘And now, here’s the first dance!’ That’s my Elton John impression. ‘And now, ladies and gentleman, the first dance!'”

Harris’ first dance with his husband was a production in and of itself. “Our first dance was Kelly Clarkson‘s ‘A Moment Like This,'” he told Letterman, sharing a photo of himself and Burtka, 39, dancing on their wedding night. “We loved American Idol season one, we were Team Kelly. That was always kind of our song. We started dancing to it and we had a plan that… when the song crescendoes — ‘Some people wait a lifetime for a moment like this!’ — fireworks are supposed to go off… Sure enough, it happened perfectly.”

“Take that Clooney!” Harris joked after celebrating the success of his well-executed wedding. “I don’t see you showing pictures of your wedding on talk shows!”
