Nick Lachey Speaks Out on Jessica Simpson's Surprise Engagement

Nick Lachey wishes nothing but the best for ex Jessica Simpson, who got engaged to Eric Johnson a week after Lachey, 37, popped the question to Vanessa Minnillo.
"I will say the same thing I always say: I wish her the very best," he told UsMagazine.com Monday during a conference call for his NBC singing show The Sing-Off (season 2 kicks off Dec. 6).

As for his own engagement, he told Us he and Minnillo, 30, are "still basking in the glow" of the news and "are enjoying that. I'm sure we'll get on the other planning shortly. We are now just enjoying this experience."

He told Us it is "very exciting" to see "what the future brings to us."
Asked why it took him so long to propose, he said, "All things have their appropriate time, so thank you."
Simpson and Lachey famously wed in 2002 (he got choked up singing "My Everything," a 98 Degrees song he wrote for her).
By 2005, the two announced they were splitting. "This is the mutual decision of two people with an enormous amount of respect and admiration for each other," they said in a statement.

Asked how she felt about Lachey's recent engagement, Simpson told radio host Ryan Seacrest last week: "Our relationship was over a really long time ago, and it would be nice if everyone could move on with us and really just celebrate the love between him and Vanessa. I do, and I really wish them nothing but the best."

Poor Jessica, her new engagement is a disaster waiting to happen, to tell the truth I think she is just trying to be just because Nick is, I mean really this guy has barely been divorced a few weeks, great way to kick off a relationship. I think Nick and Vanessa will make it work. Jessica not so much. She lets her dad butt in too much. Jessica has not known her boyfriend very long at all....he is rebounding with her. He should have been alone a long time first. How long has he been divorced? A minute?
Does anyone realize that Nick waited for Jessica, he took so much crap from Joe, he loved her even after she decided to nix the marriage counseling. Now he has moved on and I hope that he is happy. I hope that she and her father realize that Nick's was what legitimized Jessica and THEN she grew in to a brand. Nick's best work was done after before his marriage and after his divorce. Jessica's best work was done AFTER she married Nick. I hope Jessica and her father realize that Nick showed his love in ways that the two of them obviously didn't get. I hope that Vanessa gives Nick the happiness and the family life he so wished for and deserves. I also hope Jessica and Joe publicly state how horribly Nick was treated and handled. He deserved so much better from both of them.

Mark Wall you sound like a little cry baby. Marrying down, are you crazy? Vanessa is gorgeous and the proof is in the pudding. They have been together 4 yrs, I think the man just wanted to be better prepared then when he married Jessica which if you think about it, was a great ploy from Joe.

For all us rabid celeb hounds out here.. if you were paying attention a week or so ago when Nick and Jessica were at the same restaurant, Jessica was overheard sniping about Vanessa, even claiming to have paid for Vanessa's clothing! First Jessica announces she is DEEPLY SADDENED to hear of Nicks engagement and now this? Jessica is just trying to upstage Nick&Vanessa and imo it's PATHETIC. Is Jess's 'fiance' even divorced yet?
He was asked about it, it's not like he called the paparazzi and had a press conference about it. He was talking about HIS show and the reporter obviously has to bring up Jessica. These two were over 5 years ago...people need to get over it. Nick and Jessica obviously have.
Nick is getting more press over talking about Jessica once again then his own career or boring love life. She wished him the best last week and everyone jumped all over her. I think they both moved on (him after 2 weeks even though he cried like a little girl to sell records). Getting engaged is no big deal. Who cares if they only dated a week or 4 years? Doesn't mean Nick won't sober up and dump Vanessa before it's offical. It's not final til they say "I Do". They are both marrying down and were more hotter personally and professionally as a couple. Us Weekly is going to make it him against her as usual.

OMG, people. Ok, ok, he's 37. Jesus, once one person corrects it, we really don't need to see a dozen other people doing the same thing.
I highly doubt he jumped the gun over Jessica's pathetic engagement. They have been together for 4 years! I don't know why dating for 4 years is considered "waiting so long". With Hollywood's track record I'm glad he waited until he was sure she was the right girl instead of jumping into something prematurely (i.e. Jessica's engagement).
