A police officer examines a body part, covered in a plastic bag, which was discovered on Copacabana Beach near the Olympic beach volleyball venue on June 29, 2016, in Rio de Janeiro.

Things are going from bad to worse. On Wednesday, June 29, mutilated human body parts washed ashore on Rio’s famous Copacabana Beach, not too far from where the Games’ beach volleyball tournaments will be held in August.

According to CNN, the parts had washed up from the sea, and included a foot and another unidentified body part. Police officers believe the victim was either a woman or young adult.

This latest discovery follows closely behind several other unpleasant news developments from the city, which has been making headlines in recent weeks over its lack of preparedness for the Games, which kick off August 5.

Earlier this month, drug trafficker Nicolas Labre Pereira, nicknamed “Fat Family,” escaped from a Brazilian hospital, prompting numerous gun battles that resulted in 10 deaths.

And on Monday, June 27, Rio police staged a protest about their poor labor conditions, greeting visitors at the city’s international airport with a sign that read “Welcome to Hell. Police and firefighters don’t get paid. Whoever comes to Rio de Janeiro will not be safe.”

Another banner held by officers read “The police’s priority is the people. The government’s priority is the Olympics.”

That same day, pro golfer Rory McIlroy bowed out of his Olympic run because of his growing concerns about the Zika virus.

"After much thought and deliberation, I have decided to withdraw my name from consideration for this summer's Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro," McIlroy, 27, said, via ESPN. "After speaking with those closest to me, I've come to realize that my health and my family's health comes before anything else. Even though the risk of infection from the Zika virus is considered low, it is a risk nonetheless and a risk I am unwilling to take."
