Oscars 2014: 10 Most Memorable Flashback Moments From Last Year

Jennifer Lawrence falling at the Oscars in 2014
Before the 87th Annual Academy Awards kick-off on Sunday, Feb. 22, Us Weekly looks back at the top 10 best moments from 2014

Will this year be just as good? With the 87th Annual Academy Awards just around the corner on Sunday, Feb. 22, Us Weekly looks back at some of the highlights from last year’s star-studded show.

Who face-planted on the red carpet? Which star looked completely unrecognizable? Who won? Check it out below:

1. Jennifer Lawrence Steals the Show
The American Hustle actress was anything but boring at the 2014 ceremony. She first tripped (for the second Oscars in a row) while walking the red carpet in her red Dior dress. Turning heads once more, she wore an edgy frock to the Vanity Fair afterparty — and left her underwear at home.

2. John Travolta Has “Adele Dazim” Moment
The Hairspray actor famously flubbed Idina Menzel’s name before she took the stage to belt out Frozen’s “Let It Go.” A Twitter parody was quickly made and viewers were able to generate their own “Adele Dazim” names.

3. Ben Affleck Skips Show
The Gone Girl actor was a noticeable no-show at the 2014 ceremony, but he did show up to Vanity Fair’s afterparty with wife Jennifer Garner on his arm. As many will remember, the ceremony was one year since Affleck was snubbed in the Director category for Argo in 2013. The drama did take home the Best Picture category though.

4. Jared Leto’s Stellar Year
The 30 Seconds to Mars rocker was memorable at the 2014 ceremony and throughout the entire awards season. He picked up the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for Dallas Buyers Club, made a new friend in newbie Lupita Nyong’o, photobombed Anne Hathaway, and sported his eye-catching man bun at several events. He also gave one of the most heartwarming acceptance speeches.

“In 1971 Bossier City, Louisiana, there was a teenage girl who was pregnant with her second child. She was a high school dropout and a single mom, but somehow, she managed to make a better life for herself and her children,” he said. “She encouraged her kids to be creative, to work hard and to do something special. That girl is my mother, and she’s here tonight.”

5. Lupita Nyong’o Is Belle of the Ball
What a year! The Kenyan actress broke out in Hollywood both on-screen and on the red carpet. She was nominated for her first Oscar ever and later took home the gold in the Best Actress category for her work in 12 Years a Slave. Some of her to-die-for outfits throughout awards season included a light blue Prada gown and diamond headband (Oscars), green Dior gown (BAFTAs), and a custom blue Gucci dress (SAGs).

6. Ellen DeGeneres‘ Star-Studded Selfie
Hard to forget! The 2014 Oscars host gathered ’round 10 stars to take the most retweeted selfie ever during the live show. Bradley Cooper held up the camera and posed with DeGeneres, Jared Leto, Jennifer Lawrence, Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts, Channing Tatum, Kevin Spacey, Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Lupita Nyong’o, and Lupita’s brother Peter. Liza Minnelli was sadly left out as she couldn’t be seen in the way back.

7. Kim Novak Looks Unrecognizable
The screen legend caused quite the stir when she stepped out on the red carpet. Her stiff speech on stage and appearance led to Frozen jokes on Twitter. “Kim Novak’s face just won for Frozen,” one user said of the Vertigo star. Comedian Nick Youssef added: “Kim Novak was just safely transported back to the Hollywood Wax Museum.”

8. Matthew McConaughey Leads the Pack
Alright, alright, alright! The once romantic comedy actor came out on top when he won the Best Actor category for his work in Dallas Buyers Club (and every other award during the awards season). “My hero is me at 35. You see, every day, and every week, and every month, and every year of my life my hero is always ten years away,” he said in his speech. “I’m never going to be my hero. I’m not going to obtain that and that’s fine with me because it keeps me with somebody to keep on chasing.”

9. Pizza Break!
Host Ellen DeGeneres ordered dozens of pizzas during the live show so A-listers could chow down. Brad Pitt, Meryl Streep, and Julia Roberts gladly dug in. In a viewer-made GIF, however, it appeared that Angelina Jolie hilariously was overlooked while the grub was being passed around.
