Oscars so white? Think again. Chris Rock dared to go there with a hilarious faux movie montage of the Best Picture nominees at the Oscars on Sunday, February 28, subbing black comedians into some of the year’s top films.
The snippet included references to Joy, The Danish Girl, The Martian and even The Revenant.
“Maybe one day they’ll make a movie about a skinny white lady who invented a mop! Whereas a black girl would have to invent the cure to cancer before they even give her a TV movie,” Whoopi Goldberg quips to Jennifer Lawrence in a scene from Joy.
In another snippet, Leonardo DiCaprio gets roughed up by Saturday Night Live’s Leslie Jones, who takes the place of the vicious grizzly bear in The Revenant.
“There are no black actresses!” she yells at DiCaprio as she tosses him around like a rag doll.
But perhaps one of the funniest — and most surprising — cameos in the montage came from Tracy Morgan, who donned a dress and munched on a piece of pastry as he stood in for Eddie Redmayne.
“I’m a Danish girl!” he exclaims as he takes a huge bite out of the sweet treat. “This danish is good though!”
Earlier in the night, Rock proved he was ready to tackle the #OscarsSoWhite controversy head-on during his opening monologue, joking about the headline-making lack of diversity at the awards.
“Jada [Pinkett Smith] got mad and said she’s not coming. Jada boycotting the Oscars is like me boycotting Rihanna’s panties. I wasn’t invited!” he cracked.
