Blake Shelton shocked fans on Wednesday night with a violent, seemingly anti-gay Tweet.

Referencing Twain's romantic hit "Any Man of Mine," the country singer and coach on The Voice tweeted: "Re-writing my fav Shania Twain song.. Any man that tries Touching my behind He's gonna be a beaten, bleedin', heaving kind of guy..."

(Twain's original lyrics are "Any man of mine better walk the line – Better show me a teasin' squeezin' pleasin' kinda time.")

Demanding that Shelton, 34, apologize, GLAAD wrote in a Thursday blog post: "This is one of the judges on what's so far been one of the most gay-friendly reality shows on television. For him to make a joke to his 300-thousand-plus followers about leaving a gay man 'beaten, bleeding and heaving' is completely unacceptable."

"Blake Shelton needs to recognize that violence against the LGBT community is not a laughing matter, and he needs to apologize to his fans, and to fans of The Voice, for his comments," GLAAD's post continues.

Soon thereafter, Shelton responded to the criticism. "Hey y'all allow me to seriously apologize for the misunderstanding with the whole re-write on the Shania song last night," he Tweeted Thursday morning. "It honestly wasn't even meant that way... I now know that their are people out there waiting to jump at everything I say on here or anywhere."

He added: "But when it comes to gay/lesbian rights or just feelings... I love everybody. So go look for a real villain and leave me out of it!!!"

Indeed, a source close to the star tells Us Weekly: "Blake is so not a homophobe. He really meant that from the perspective on Shania – it was just meant to be a jibe about someone grabbing her *ss. He feels awful." Shelton Tweeted the controversial statement after watching Twain's appearance on The Oprah Show where she opened up about her now ex-husband cheating on her with her best friend.

Adds the insider: "He's the nicest, sweetest and most down-to-earth guy. He's extremely gay friendly. The man loves the Golden Girls!"

Isn't it interesting that Blake tweets this a few days before "The Voice" episode airs where he kicks off the Gay Mormon? http://bit.ly/iHLNWq

Oh get over it people, it's a free country to say what you wish. I can't blame him for saying that. You don't have to be homophobic to say that you don't want someone touching you in a way that makes you uncomfortable.

What's implicit in their statement is that if a gay guy grabs a guy's butt it's ok because he's gay and would be wrong for the guy to retaliate.... Have I missed something? So are homosexuals now admitting they secretly want it so they can grope/molest/assault/rape a straight guy or woman and not face repurcussions? If a guy grabs my girlfriend's butt, he's going to lose some teeth. If a guy grabs my butt, he's going to lose some teeth. Bunch of crybabies....

Danae'- exactly! Why does it have to be such a big deal? You're the one that is making it a big deal. My point is is that it's not.

Come on y'all....you need to grow a Hillbilly Bone".....The man is no more a homophobe than say Sir Elton John!!

I tried to correct a comment and it erased it. Ah well.

  • May 06, 2011 - 3:14am John House

    *make any sense

  • May 06, 2011 - 3:13am John House

The original song is from a woman's perspective, yes. But from this article, it doesn't say that Shania (on her Oprah appearance) admitted to any man beating on her or touching her without her consent, so his re-write does not make and sense in that context. There's something funky going on with this guy.

  • May 06, 2011 - 1:45am Chad Ettore

do any of you even read the articles before you start posting comments? Those aren't his words coming from HIS perspective. Those are her lyrics from a woman's perspective. As if a woman was singing it. This is why I hate texting. People take things out of context. He wasn't even making a joke. All he was doing was toughening up the words. All ya'll tryin to crucify the guy are complete idiots.

Kim - Why does it have to be such a big deal....heterosexuals shove their lifestyles in everyone's face too. Just because I am straight doesn't mean that I want to see a man and women sucking face at the mall....I don't mind them holding hands, hugging, or what not ,but there is a time and a place. "THEY" (homosexuals) don't think that they deserve special treatment you bigot, they just want the SAME treatment that hetero's do and THEY SHOULD have it!! ALSO, Blake is a not a homo-phobic anything...it was a joke and people need to stop and take a breath and not everything that everyone says is hating or disrespecting anyone.

  • May 05, 2011 - 10:57pm Cameron Robert

My guess is this closeted-gay bigot is just mad no guy wants to touch him. It's amazing that cretins spew hate and think a little "oops, sorry" is going to get them off the hook for being a scumbag. Can't wait for him to lash out at a gay guy and have the gay guy beat the crap out of him. Then he'll be the one who's "a beaten, bleedin', heaving kind of guy..." Bigots get what they deserve.

    Sensitive Fvcks!!!

  • May 05, 2011 - 6:51pm Kim Worsham Horton

Elizabeth Aspen- yes I can honey. Homosexuals shove their immoral lifestyle down everyone's throat and no, I don't agree with it. Fvckin sue me. Not everyone has to. Homosexuals need to quit being so damn sensitive. They think that they need special treatment from everyone else. You're the a$$hole.

  • May 05, 2011 - 6:14pm Orean Keels Jr.

You guys have missed the point of his "new lyrics" ENTIRELY. He was speaking from Shania's perspective, having watched her on Oprah. He was not writing it as though HE was saying it. Damn people...READ!

  • May 05, 2011 - 5:38pm Elizabeth Smith

Just so I have this correct, if in fact this were to be taken literal, he is being crucified because he doesn't want other men touching his butt? And I guess we're suppose to ignore the fact that he doesn't even mention anything about anyone being gay? Hmm...okay then. I feel like some of these organizations demean themselves (not to mention sound hypocritical) the way they seemingly sit around, waiting for someone to slip up, and then attack them for it. Not everything in this world is about being gay or straight, black or white, Christian or Muslim, or anything else of the like.

  • May 05, 2011 - 5:09pm Michelle McGolden

Leave him alone! He was not making a gay slur. He seems like such a nice, kind person and I can't picture him saying anything about anyone's beliefs/practices. Stop nit picking over stupid things and do something more meaningful.

  • May 05, 2011 - 5:01pm Michelle Seal

That is crazy... I think GLAAD is reaching just a tad here. In no way did he say that gays should be beaten. It was a JOKE, people!

  • May 05, 2011 - 4:47pm Lori O'Leary

Oh for God's sake, people need to grow a dang funnybone and quit being so dang sensitive.

  • May 05, 2011 - 4:07pm Ashley Harrison

anyone who reads his tweets know he's the typical comedian. Love him on The Voice too!

  • May 05, 2011 - 3:02pm Elizabeth Aspen

@Kim Worsham Horton - could you be a bigger A-hole? No.
