So much for pillow talk. Zayn Malik ended his engagement to Perrie Edwards in August 2015 with a "simple text message," the Little Mix singer claimed in the girl group's new book.
A passage from Our World (which hits bookstores Thursday, October 20) was leaked on Twitter by a Little Mix fan account. According to the post, Edwards, 23, writes, "It was horrible, the worst time in my life. A four-year relationship, two-year engagement ended by a simple text message. Just like that. Even though things in my career were going really well, it was incredibly difficult for me."
The British songstress (who did not mention Malik by name) also revealed in the book that her Little Mix bandmates — Jesy Nelson, Leigh-Anne Pinnock and Jade Thirlwall — helped her get through the tough time.
"The girls were amazing," Edwards wrote. "We'd have sleepovers and they'd get my favorite desserts and do everything they could to cheer me up. I surrounded myself with friends and family. If my mam wasn't there, my dad was, and if he wasn't there, my brother was, or my cousin Ellie, who is my best friend, or Caitlyn my amazing little sister, or Katherine my bestest friend in the world. I didn't want to be alone because when I was I'd start thinking about things and get upset."
The excerpt quickly made the rounds on social media, prompting the hashtag #PerrieExposedZaynParty to trend on Twitter on Sunday, October 16.
Edwards' claims go against the story Malik told The Fader magazine last year when he was asked to address rumors that he dumped his fiancée via text message.
"I have more respect for Perrie than to end anything over text message," he told the publication in November 2015. "I love her a lot, and I always will, and I would never end our relationship over four years like that. She knows that, I know that, and the public should know that as well. I don't want to explain why or what I did. I just want the public to know I didn't do that."
The "Like I Would" singer (and former One Direction member) is now dating model Gigi Hadid, while Edwards says she's still single.
"Right now I'm enjoying being single and I know I don't need anyone," she wrote in Our World. "I've got plenty of time and I'm not in any hurry, but at the same time it would be nice to meet someone. Hopefully someone will come along eventually."
