Roughing it, royal-style!
Prince William and Duchess Catherine took a breather from their energetic royal tour of Canada on Tuesday with a trip — by canoe! — to Eagle Island, a.k.a. "Honeymoon Island" in the remote Northwest Territories.
Departing from Blachford Lake Lodge on Tuesday, William and Kate, both 29, were snapped paddling and grinning ear to ear as they headed out to the breathtaking island. The area is so far north that it never gets dark, with the sun disappearing for a brief moment at dusk in what is known as the slowest sunset on earth. William hatched the getaway plan himself after their Northwest Territories plans were finalized. See more pics of the royal couple's canoe trip.
With their security team waiting nearby on the shore, the royal couple enjoyed three private hours on the island, complete with a rustic wilderness feast (prepared by a chef) of local cranberries, bannock break and caribou steaks cooked on an open campfire. (The tiny island features just two dozen pine trees that house several bald eagle nests and a white sand beach with pink granite rocks and crystal clear water.)

Blachford Lake Lodge's owners Mike Freeland and Tess Macintosh spent their honeymoon night on the island back in 1991.
"When I was taken there I thought my new husband was the most romantic man on earth," Macintosh said. "I'm sure that is just how Kate must feel now."
She added of the secluded, stunning spot: "Once you are there you are surrounded by nature. Only the sound of the occasional Loon bird in the distance breaks the silence…this really will re-charge their batteries."
After that brief respite, the duo returned to the frontier town of Yellowknife (about 100 miles away) via motorboat and float plane. They head to Calgary on Wednesday.
