Ricky Gervais turned his hosting gig at the Golden Globe Awards into a mini-roast of Mel Gibson!

Gervais, 48, drank a glass of beer on stage and admitted to the audience that he had already "had a couple" pints.

"I'm not going to lie to you, I hope I've not offended anyone -- It's not my fault," he said before pointing to his beer. "I like a drink as much as the next man, unless the next man is Mel Gibson!"

The British comedian's crack drew laughter and gasps from the likes of Diane Kruger, Fergie and Josh Duhamel.

Gibson -- who was charged with drunk driving in 2006 -- took the jab in stride. As the actor, 54, came out to present the award for Best Director, he laughed it off, pretended to slur his words and made a joke of his own.

"I'm here to talk about Inglourious Basterds," he said. "Or as actors like to call them, directors!"
