Robin Roberts Talks Coming Out, Life With Longtime Girlfriend

Good Morning America host Robin Roberts opened up to Ellen DeGeneres on her talk show about coming out and life with her girlfriend, Amber Laign

Robin Roberts is opening up a little more about her personal life.

Exactly four months after coming out, the "Good Morning America" host made an appearance on Tuesday's "The Ellen DeGeneres Show," where she talked about coming out last December and life with her girlfriend, Amber Laign. Roberts said that her massage therapist love was backstage and didn't want to appear on the show, but she shared a new photo of them — snapped on the TV personality's 53rd birthday last November — and they were both beaming.

"This is where I'm taking one for the team," said the smitten Roberts. "She photographed much better in this picture than I did. But I said, 'You know what? I'm going use this picture because you look so doggone good.'"

Roberts went on to share that they met on a blind date and will celebrate their ninth anniversary this July. They don't live together, and Laign shies away from the limelight.

"Not everyone wants to be in the spotlight," said Roberts. "She's very, very supportive and she’s been right there beside me every step of the way."

That includes during the breast cancer survivor's battle with the rare blood disorder myelodysplastic syndrome. The "GMA" host said that it was Laign's support during that health crisis which ultimately caused her to come out last December in a Facebook post.

"I had been thanking my doctors and nurses, my sister, who was a perfect match — and rightfully so. I asked [Laign], I said, 'I really want to say thank you.'"

So she did. Her post thanking "my long time girlfriend, Amber" quickly made headlines and a few weeks later, Roberts shared the first public photo of them with her family on "GMA" the next month.

Roberts said that Laign is included in her new book, "Everybody's Got Something," but noted that they didn't always agree.

"In the book, she takes the caregiver's point of view and it's really funny that sometimes we didn't see the same thing eye to eye," Roberts said on "Ellen." "I thought it was very powerful for people because there's so many that care for their loved ones. So to see her side of it and to see my side of it was pretty interesting."

As for Roberts's health these days? She's "strong like a bull."

She added, "I have never been this happy nor healthy in such a long time."
