Notorious RBG! Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg let a little loose at last month’s State of the Union address, she admitted on Thursday, Feb. 12.
The longtime judge, 81, was speaking to a crowd at George Washington University about her career, when she was asked about President Barack Obama‘s recent State of the Union address. During the annual event, Ginsburg was caught dozing off.
“You went to the State of the Union this year, and you fell asleep,” the interviewer began, to which Ginsburg responded with a smile, “As I often do.”
Joined by fellow justice Antonin Scalia on the stage, Ginsburg went on to explain her misstep.
“The audience, for the most part, is awake because they’re bobbing up and down all the time,” Ginsburg said of the Democrat and Republican politicos, who traditionally stand and clap for specific issues and stances in the address. “We sit there, stone-faced, the sober judges, but we’re not — at least I wasn’t — 100 percent sober.”
“Before we went to the State of the Union we had dinner together, and I vowed this year, ‘Just sparkling water, stay away from the wine!'” Ginsburg continued, attributing her quick nap to her pre-SOTU imbibing. “In the end, the dinner was so delicious it needed wine to accompany it.”
While Ginsburg’s sleeping seemed subtle enough, it was captured on national television and made it all the way to her family members.
“I got a call when I came home from one of my granddaughters,” the celebrated justice spilled. “She said, ‘Bubbe, you were sleeping at the State of the Union!'”
