Director Sam Mendes is slamming a British tabloid report that his marriage to Kate Winslet ended because of an affair with British actress Rebecca Hall.
Following Monday's announced breakup of Winslet, 34, and Mendes, 44, after 7 years of marriage, Britain's Daily Mail newspaper claimed that Mendes and Hall became romantically involved after meeting in 2006.
A rep for Mendes calls the charge "utter nonsense...untrue and ridiculous."
Vicky Cristina Barcelona star Hall, 27, worked with Mendes on the 2006 indie Starter for 10 (which Mendes produced) and have collaborated on various theater projects.
Sources have told Us Weekly that it wasn't infidelity but career-related issues that caused Winslet and Mendes' marriage to unravel.
Mendes found his wife "overbearing" while they filmed Revolutionary Road together in 2007. After years of arguing, the couple came to an impasse when Winslet agreed to shoot the miniseries Mildred Pierce in New York while Mendes wanted to stay in London.
A source says, "Kate told Sam, 'Your career is not more important than mine." The couple has a six-year-old son, Joe, together.
