Getting to the bottom of it. Samantha Bee tried to find out why people support controversial presidential candidate Donald Trump in a segment on her TBS show, Full Frontal, on Monday, March 14, and she possibly came away even more mystified.
Believing "there had to be more to Trump supporters than what we see on TV," the former Daily Show correspondent sat down with 10 young, college-educated Trump supporters and "forced myself to listen to them."
When she talked to the group about Trump's plan to ban all Muslims from the United States, they were all quick to correct her, jumping in to say "Temporarily," in unison.
"It's about security, not religion," added one woman.
"Is it cause for alarm when white supremacists love the candidate you love?" Bee asked, alluding to former Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke's endorsement of Trump.
"We all love America," the same woman replied. "I guess if there's something that we can come together on, if we want this country to be great, I think everyone can get behind that."
"Was there anything we could agree on?" Bee pondered as she ushered the group into a party that included snacks, gift bags, a champagne pyramid and an on-site masseuse. And, more importantly, a fact-checker.
"How do you think he's going to pay for the wall?" Bee asked.
"Mexico's going to pay for it," the Trump supporter replied.
"The Mexican government said there's absolutely no way they're going to pay for it," the fact-checker clarified.
"You know what Trump's response is?" the woman responded excitedly. "The wall just got 10 feet taller."
Cut to a sullen Bee taking a bite of an appetizer and groaning, "Urgh. How do you fact-check bluster?"
Next she spoke to a black Trump supporter about the language the Republican front-runner uses, which some have criticized as racist.
"He speaks in an old way," the supporter said.
"Like an old racist," Bee pressed.
"Probably, yes," the supporter replied. "If it is a negative, I would say it's a minor negative."
"I'm so confused by you," the host exclaimed.
Cut to Bee standing over her fact-checker as he hyperventilated into a paper bag. "Watching someone choke down a piece of their soul just to belong broke my fact-checker," Bee explained.
Full Frontal With Samantha Bee airs on TBS Mondays at 10:30 p.m. ET.
