Guess Sean Penn and Robin Wright Penn haven't stayed in touch since she filed for divorced last year.

"She is a ghost to me now," Sean, 49, tells Vanity Fair in a new interview "We spent all those years together.... Now she's just gone."

PHOTOS: Look back on these big-time Hollywood splits

Robin, 44, submitted divorce papers last August. The couple had been together since 1989 and wed in 1996. They have two children: son Hopper Jack, 16, and daughter Dylan, 19.

The spouses filed papers twice before -- in December 2007 and in April 2009 -- but reconciled shortly thereafter. Last year, the actress told More magazine lthat their marriage was definitely done. "I hit that crossroad a while ago...I know what I don't want."

PHOTOS: Hollywood's most expensive divorces

Talking to historian Douglas Brinkley in Vanity Fair, Sean Penn explains that his split has helped him become more of an activist and humanitarian -- helping out in Haiti and other fragile, embattled parts of the world.

PHOTOS: Couples who've reconciled

"I was for 20 years in a relationship with Robin and 18 years with children. I didn't have time to commit to anything--for real--in places like Iraq, except to denounce the war. But now I’m single. I can lend a hand."

She is a "ghost to him now"? What is he 12?? Grow up Penn, youa re on your way to being a nobody in Hollywood anyway. And I'm sure you are now just a bad dream to robin. Good riddance.

Funny - being married didn't stop him from his many affairs but did stop him from being an active humanitarian. Interesting.

To you Whatever: Ever think people are just being a$$holes and being funny, except when the obvious is pointed out and people say what the he!! they want too? Probably not. Were you in Haiti? This man is a true a$$ that basically spat on America and our Soldiers love him for all his commie ways if you want to, but most on here elect not to. Now go lay a egg.

He's making excuses. There are people who are married with children and have TIME to commit to important causes, not just celebrities, but regular everyday people too.

  • June 03, 2010 - 7:23pm Thought they would make it

So sad. Divorce stinks. I thought they would make it. They were together longer than most Hollywood types.

    RUN, ROBIN, RUN!!!!!

God, he should just be quiet! Don't disrepect the mother of your children, and don't make lame excuses for not doing more, when you could have. Being a great father and a husband is even MORE valuable than anything else you could ever do in your life. Is he so blind he doesn't realize this?

    Damn good actor too!

I've always loved Robin Wright as an actress. I'm sure she's missed out on a lot of great roles over the past two decades, giving her youth to Sean Penn. But she did love him and that's why she stayed. That and the kids. Having children always plays a factor in why some people stay together longer than they should. For some people anyway. Honorable but sad. Hope Robin has found a new love who worships her and her talent. She's still beautiful.

So how is all of the non-communication affecting their children? I was very sorry to hear about the Penn's divorce but they need to step up to the plate and attempt to have some sort of cordial relationship for the sake of their children.

I hope that Robyn is out having the time of her life and enjoying everything that life has to offer her. She is a nice person and a great actress and she does not have to bother with Sean Penn anymore. Kudos to Robyn. YOU GO GIRL!

I absolutely despise him!! He is an IDIOT! She is a smart and talented lady and I'm thrilled she learned to move on.

I really hope their kids don't read this. Very tacky to speak about the mother of his children like this.

What a creep. Blaming his marriage, wife and kids for keeping him from being the great humanitarian that he thinks he is. Bull. Just another egotistical, has-been actor. Maybe now that Robin is free of his dead weight, she can pursue the acting roles that she deserves - such a beauty and talent.

Nice thing to say about the mother of his kids, they must be so proud of the disgusting PIG

  • June 03, 2010 - 2:53pm kayla

I'm sure she's glad to be RID of him!

  • June 03, 2010 - 2:51pm Speedy

He's a big turd, always has been. Robin needed to get out from under his emotional histrionics to survive. Can you imagine being a husband and a parent prevents you from doing anything real? Oh words to live by Sean, baby!
