Spencer Pratt: The Hills Producers Wanted Me to Leave Heidi Montag at the Altar

Speidi strikes back! After years as reality TV’s biggest villains, Spencer Pratt and Heidi Montag have begun to speak out about what really went on while filming the MTV smash The Hills. The Santa Barbara residents visited Bethenny Frankel‘s talk show, Bethenny, on Wednesday, Feb. 5 to talk about their experiences.

Like many before them, Pratt, 30, and Montag, 27, admitted that much of the show was faked or scripted. The couple confirmed that they went over-the-top for a reason, and weren’t really that extreme in real life.

“On our show we knew the stakes,” Pratt said. “The bonuses if the ratings went up. No one forced us, but you want to be like, ‘What can I do to get the ratings up?’ Our executive producer of The Hills wanted to have a Gossip Girl. He was not competing against reality shows, he wanted Gossip Girl, Sex in the City…”

“He wanted an Emmy,” Montag chimed in, laughing. “Sorry, we didn’t get it.”

The couple, who survived eight years together amidst the show’s tumultuous storylines and constant press attention, recalls several memorable scenes that were entirely faked, including the time when Montag told Pratt she might be pregnant, and he kicked her out of his car and drove off.

In reality, they said the producers made them shoot more than 10 takes before Montag hopped back in Pratt’s car and drove off to dinner with him.

“I would never be with someone who would kick me out of the car in the first place!” Montag exclaimed. “I’m not a pushover for sure!”

After years of cooperating with producers, the dynamic duo was shocked when Pratt was repeatedly asked to leave Montag during their televised wedding.

“They kept on turning off the lights and saying, ‘Let’s just call it. We’ve got the exit door and we’ve got your Rolls Royce right there. We can always reschedule and Heidi will leave with Lauren [Conrad] and it’ll work out great,'” Pratt recalled. “I’m like, ‘There are people that flew here. Heidi’s dad will choke me to death.’ This is where it gets real.”

“We have to draw the line somewhere,” Montag continued. “That was the beginning of drawing the line with them. It was towards the end, and we were like, ‘We’ve done so much crap for you guys. The fact that you wouldn’t give us a day, and now you’re trying in all your power to ruin it.'”

But the wedding went off without a hitch, and the couple continued their antics through the sixth and final season. Pratt said he would “absolutely” do a reunion season of The Hills, and Montag revealed that she’d be excited to let her future children work in reality television.

As for Montag’s former bestie Lauren Conrad, the spouses aren’t holding their breath for a renewed friendship.

“I would never say never, I would say most likely not,” Montag admitted.

“Not by our choice,” Pratt clarified. “It’s all positive here. I just think from my perspective, she’s so solid in her brand and her statement she’s made ‘Forgive and forget.’ So it would be hard for her to look like a hypocrite. She always said we’d never last, we’re eight years together and clearly you were wrong.”
