Taylor Swift VMA F-Bomb: Ed Sheeran Says the Moment Was Misinterpreted, Comment Meant for Selena Gomez

What are best friends for? Taylor Swift made headlines when she dropped the f-bomb just as One Direction’s Harry Styles was taking the stage at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards, but now her good pal Ed Sheeran is sticking up for the 23-year-old pop star.

In a recent meet and greet in Portland, Oregon, the “Lego House” singer admitted that Swift’s “shut the f— up!” comment was actually directed toward her BFF Selena Gomez. The blonde beauty was responding to Gomez stating that Miley Cyrus was probably going to take home a Moonman for Best Pop Video, a category the two stars were both competing in. Gomez, 21, eventually took home the win.

Sheeran, 22, also revealed that the “I Knew You Were Trouble” singer knew immediately that her ill-timed outburst was caught on camera. Swift went up to the British star afterward and said, “I think I messed up.”

But the incident didn’t stop Swift and Styles, 19 from interacting at a VMAs after party — sort of. With mutual pal Sheeran standing in between them, the exes posed for a “super awkward” photo at the SoHo Grand Hotel Club Room in Manhattan.

“Ed made sure to keep them separate,” an insider told Us Weekly at the time. The redheaded star is often forced to play “Switzerland” when it comes to his two friends, the source added.
