Here comes even more drama! Before the fifth season of Bravo’s The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills premieres tonight, Nov. 18, star Lisa Vanderpump stopped by HuffPost Live to chat about her experience on the catfight-obsessed smash. The restaurateur Housewife divulged her secrets to success on the reality series, and revealed how this season’s new cast members got along with the cast.
Vanderpump, 54, said that the new season of RHOBH is “very different,” and is overall more positive than the hugely tumultuous fourth season.
“We had an amazing time, there was a lot of glamour, a lot of bling, a lot of laughter, so there was a lot of good stuff as well,” she revealed. “I think the season now goes back to where it was that people really fell in love with, because last season was too much negativity.”
The new season also brings the addition of two new cast members, soap stars Eileen Davidson and Lisa Rinna.
“I knew Lisa Rinna for 20-something years, and I was happy she joined the cast,” said Vanderpump.
Rinna, 51, has experience with reality television from her own series, Harry Loves Lisa, which aired on TV Land in 2010. Vanderpump said that despite her reality background, the very different RHOBH dynamics still led Rinna into a few “muddles.”
“She’s a great girl, and I think the audience will really love her,” said Vanderpump.
Vanderpump said that audience support is what has helped her find success on The Real Housewives franchise.
“I’ve really tried not to come back with a negative attitude, because after last season I felt so beaten up,” she revealed. “Viewers were incredibly supportive.”
The Housewife said the viewer comments and opinions on the Bravo site and blogs has been overwhelmingly supportive.
“The fans have been pretty supportive of me,” said Vanderpump. “Some people obviously hate my guts and that’s their opinion and they’re entitled to it.”
Vanderpump said that her self-depricating humor has also helped her gain favor with the audience.
“Be honest with your convictions, what you say offscreen - let it parlay on-screen, as well,” she advised.
In addition to over “150 episodes of reality television,” including Dancing With the Stars, and her spin-off Vanderpump Rules, she has shown her acting chops in highly touted appearances, including a recent scene on the new season of Lisa Kudrow’s HBO show The Comeback.
Vanderpump said she’s often asked to do acting appearances, but usually turns them down due to her busy schedule. She couldn’t say no to the Friends star, however.
“I thought ‘I’ve got to do it,’ because she is iconic to me when it comes to being a comedic genius,” said the brunette beauty.
The star also made headlines when she appeared alongside the other Beverly Hills Housewives in the music video for Lady Gaga’s “G.U.Y.”
“When Lady Gaga asked me to do the video, I was like ‘no I can’t work with those women,’” said Vanderpump. “And then she called me personally and I couldn’t say no.”
