Team USA is on top once more.

The American women's soccer team defeated Japan 2-1 in their quest for the gold medal Thursday evening, led by midfielder Carli Lloyd (who scored both points for Team USA) and goalkeeper Hope Solo, who successfully defended her turf against the goal that would have tied the game, using her entire body to block Mana Iwabuchi's shot.

The victory was an especially sweet one for the team looking to avenge their crushing 2011 World Cup loss to the Japanese last summer.

This is the Team USA's third straight Olympic gold medal in women's soccer, and its fourth since the Olympics began hosting the event at the 1996 Atlanta Games.
