Hudgens’ father died from stage 4 cancer on Saturday, January 30, hours before the actress, 27, was scheduled to perform in the three-hour live Fox broadcast.

“It was incredibly hard for her,” a source told Us Weekly on Monday, “but she’s a true entertainer, so it was on with the show.”

The High School Musical alum has also found support and empathy from her longtime boyfriend, Austin Butler, whose mom, Lori, passed away from cancer in September 2014. At the time, the 24-year-old actor described his late parent as his “best friend” and his “hero.”

“He was by [Vanessa’s] side nonstop,” the source told Us. “And having been through the same situation with his mom, he was very understanding.”
