The mom of six, 40, turned heads in a champagne strapless, Swarovski-beaded gown and platform pumps by Atelier Versace. She accessorized with 16-carat platinum and diamond stud earrings by Robert Procop and kept her brunette locks down. Pitt, 51, meanwhile, looked handsome as he wore a black tux and bow tie. He did away with his usual scruff, and slicked back his hair instead.

“We did our best, as any artist does. We tried together to be open, to be honest, and to give of ourselves, and you never know if you’re going to connect to an audience. This film is, at the core, about grief, and that grief was from the loss of my mother,” Jolie said at the TCL Chinese Theatre, tearing up. “But in the end, I think this film is also about learning how to move past it, and so, I’m very, very happy to be here tonight.” (Jolie’s mother, Marcheline Bertrand, died of ovarian cancer at the age of 56 in January 2007.)

Jolie and Pitt — parents to Maddox, 14, Pax, 11, Zahara, 10, Shiloh, 9, and twins Knox and Vivienne, 7 — star in the romantic drama about a couple who try to fix their broken relationship while traveling through France. Jolie also wrote and directed the project.

“I’m counting on the audience to know that if it was close to us at all, we could never make this film — it’s because we’re actually very stable and these aren’t our issues,” Jolie recently said during an interview with NBC’s Tom Brokaw. She added to Entertainment Weekly: “We watch this couple go off the track and we wait to see if it gets more unhealthy, or if they will recover. I think too often people go through very painful transformative experiences and they don’t stay together. They abandon each other.”

As previously reported, the couple brought along their family while filming, and Maddox even worked as a production assistant. Production began shortly after their secret wedding ceremony in France in August 2014.

“It was probably not the wisest way to spend a honeymoon. But then again, fighting to make something together. What better metaphor for marriage?” Pitt told V magazine‘s winter issue. “It’s not a film that responds to the current zeitgeist or storytelling — rather, a quiet, mature look at the challenges of love and adult loss.”
