Ruffles and Rubbers? You Have to See These Prom Dresses Made Out of Condoms

Let’s talk about sex, baby!

Some clever couturiers are spreading awareness about practicing safe sex in a stylish way. As part of an STD awareness campaign from the Omaha, Nebraska–based Adolescent Health Project, two formalwear shops in the city are displaying dresses made entirely from condoms in their stores.

Omaha has one of the highest rates of sexually transmitted diseases in the nation, according to GetCheckedOmaha.com, which posted the dresses on its Facebook page on March 16.

They vary from mini to midi in length, and come in plenty of colors. Some of them have belts, while others boast shoulder details. But they’re not what you think: The frocks, made by fashion students from the Illinois Institute of Art-Chicago, are surprisingly cute in a Project Runway–inspired way. There’s a colorblocked halter dress with layers of yellow, blue and green ruffles made from condoms, and also a rainbow-colored dress with a sweetheart neckline.

While the dresses aren’t for sale, the price tags display safe-sex messages, per local TV station WOWT News: “Being safe is always in style. Avoid sexually transmitted diseases and unintended pregnancies.”
