Although there was no ponytail in sight, Kate Middleton broke free of her comfort zone on Thursday, April 10, wearing a LBD.
While black is the fall-back option for most women, the Duchess of Cambridge prefers anything but for her evening events (See: Her teal, navy, and cream dresses).
But for the portrait unveiling of Queen Elizabeth II in New Zealand, Middleton went back to basics in a custom Jenny Packham black dress. The classic silhouette featured long sleeves, a fitted waist, and a-line skirt. To add a sentimental touch, the black crepe look was customized with embroidered crystal ferns — New Zealand's symbol — on the shoulder.
For those who don't have Jenny Packham on speed dial, get the look for less with the Ann Taylor Crepe 3/4 Sleeve Flare Dress ($109, Anntaylor.com). The tailored frock also has a flattering boatneck, fitted waist, and slightly flared skirt.
