Alright, alright, wait — what? Matthew McConaughey looks nearly unrecognizable for his new movie Gold. The Oscar winner was photographed filming on the streets of New York City on Sunday, Oct. 4.
McConaughey, 45, does away with his six-pack abs and lustrous full blonde locks for a pudgier figure and bald look in the Stephen Gaghan-directed drama. His attire is completely different, too, and mirrors that of Christian Bale’s character in American Hustle. Instead of his Magic Mike go-to leather pants, he was spotted wearing a business suit and colorful tie.
McConaughey’s character, Kenny Wells, also gets dirty in the thriller. Wells works with geologist Michael Acosta (Edgar Ramirez) to find gold in the Indonesian jungle.
McConaughey is used to going through physical transformations for roles. He previously lost nearly 40 pounds to play real-life drug addict Ron Woodroof in 2013’s The Dallas Buyers Club. (The Texas native won the Oscar for Actor in a Leading Role for his powerful performance.)
“I got the means to lose the weight in a really healthy way. I’m eating fresh fish,” he told Daily Mail in November 2012. “I’m just eating small amounts. I’m not being starved. I’m taking care of myself.”
Gold hits theaters in 2016.
