Miley Cyrus took the “Throwback Thursday” trend seriously for her appearance on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno on Jan. 30.
The “We Can’t Stop” singer paired a denim chambray shirt with skinny jeans and denim-blue ankle-strap heels, all by Saint Laurent. While the twerking diva, 21, doled out life advice to Justin Bieber on the show, we couldn’t help but notice that her outfit was a more chic approach to the formerly taboo trend than her sparkly look from her MTV Unplugged special on Jan. 29.
For the Western-themed performance that included a dirty-dancing-filled duet with Madonna, 55, Cyrus wore a denim bikini top with oversized, glitter-dipped jeans and a ripped, baggy bedazzled denim shirt, all by Ashish.
Admittedly the former Disney star looked pulled-together and downright adorable on Leno, but every time we think of denim-on-denim, we flashback to this classic look from 2001.
In fact, Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake‘s matchy-matchy outfits at the 2001 American Music Awards is exactly the kind relationship symbiosis that Cyrus is looking for. Shortly after splitting from fiance Liam Hemsworth in September, Cyrus Tweeted a picture of the couple, writing, “I want a boyfriend that will wear jean on jean on jean with me.” (Like Madonna, Spears, 32, is another one of Cyrus’ idols; the fellow Mouseketeer sang on the track “Bangerz” from the Cyrus album of the same name, and Cyrus was in the front row of Spears’ opening show in Las Vegas last month.)
