Why Did John Boyega Wear Only One Glove to the Star Wars Premiere?

John Boyega hit the red carpet of Star Wars: The Force Awakens in L.A. on Monday, December 14. While the franchise newcomer looked sleek in a custom burgundy Versace tuxedo with black satin shawl lapels, one accessory had Us confused.

Boyega, 23, chose to wear a single black leather glove on his right hand to the event that brought out fellow stars Daisy Ridley, Lupita Nyong’o, Carrie Fisher, Harrison Ford, and Mark Hamill.

Was the actor, who plays Stormtrooper-turned-rebel Finn, foreshadowing a disastrous turn of events in the sequel? Turns out, Boyega confirmed to Entertainment Tonight that he wore just-the-one glove as a nod to Hamill’s Luke Skywalker, whose hand was chopped off by Darth Vader in The Empire Strikes Back. In the next movie, Return of the Jedi, Skywalker wears a similar black glove over his robotic hand.
