America's Got Talent Winner: No More Chicken Catching for Me!

Thursday – September 17, 2009 – 2:12pm

After Kevin Skinner, a chicken farmer from Kentucky, beat an opera singer on last night's finale of America's Got Talent, he could barely express his excitement.

"It's more than words can explain," he told Usmagazine.com after the show. "I'm 35, so I have been chasing the dream for awhile, and it hasn't come true [until now]... I had never experienced anything like that and probably never will again."

After winning the $1 million top prize on the show's fourth season, the guitar-strumming Skinner doesn't know yet what he'll do with the cash.

"I hadn’t really thought about the money," he told Us. "I'm thinking more right now about what I’m going to do in Vegas."

Look back at last season's American Idol finale!

As part of his win, he will headline the America's Got Talent variety show in Las Vegas in October.

"I'm excited about it," he said. "I have always been a performer... If you’re a performer you know how that feels. It’s good. It’s like flying a kite. It’s natural. You sing to the people, you sing to your fans, you try to be real."

But will he try to be a chicken-catcher any longer?

"Yeah, yeah -- no!" he told Us.

I think that Sharon Osborne is one of the most beautiful women in the world and I wish I could look like her! Kevin Skinner lives right down the path from where my in laws live and I got married! I am a Kentucky Gal born and bred...way to go Kevin...;However: The Opera will never ever be the same again! Barbara is the essence of grace and elegance. She is music in a pure form and Kevin is music from the heart. If these two take all our prayers and good wishes...they will not live the American Dream...They will BE THE AMERICAN DREAM! I voted for Kevin all the way. I'm really pleased that he won. Barbara was good, but I like Pop and Country and I never listen to opera. Seems there are some other Americans out there that feel the same way. Yaaay, for Kevin. I'm hoping for an album soon, because I'm a long way from Vegas. But if Willie Nelson can do Vegas, why not Kevin Skinner. Americans like character, not polished perfection.

Hey fussy people! The voting is over and it's time to let go of your favorite. I'm very, very sorry that the majority of the voters didn't agree with you. I know that it's really hard to lose a democratic vote without whining but, take a deep breath and whisper to yourself, "I do not have to whine when I don't get my way, I do not have to whine when I don't get my way, I do not..."

Barbara Padilla was awesome, but her singing belongs at The Met or somewhere in New York. A million cheers for Kevin Skinner!!!!

So, maybe Kevin isn't the best singer in the show. So what.America has voted!!!!!!! That is how it's done. So, leave him alone and let him do the best he can. I'm sure he will do CD's. This is his dream and it DID come true. I voted for him and am glad he made it. Good luck to him and his family and God bless.

America's got Talent... the judges certainly chose people who had a great deal of talent. Here's my thing, though... America is supposed to vote on actual talent and ability. While I respect Kevin and his background and I can relate to growing up as a country boy, I looked very objectively at the abilities of the performers. In my mind, the list should have been far different than the top 5 America voted for. Between Barbara and Kevin though? The quality, accuracy, and overall talent goes to Barbara. Kevin's X factor, I believe, was superior stage manipulation. As in making the stage atmosphere fit the performance being delivered to make it more emotional. I believe that Barbara should have won hands down, but I was also shocked when Adam Lambert lost to Chris on American Idol this last season due to Adam's constant quality and creativity through the WHOLE season. I also believe the final song was performed much better by Adam and that Chris was pitchy and the version that Chris used was not as well arranged. I'm getting to think that it's not the talent, it's that America isn't voting objectively overall. I've got my reasons for believing this, but it's simply another opinion that will likely be read by maybe a couple hundred people and forgotten. Thanks for letting me post my opinion.

I think Kevin won because is the the ultimate american dreamer who captured the heart of all dreamers. He was honest, real and very much his own person. He deserved the win!!

Sorry, but this guy was NOT the best talent on the show. I feel for him but come on people!!!! He cried on every interview. This is NOT a Las Vegas act. SO MANY others were so much better than him. WORST YEAR EVER ON AMERICA"S GOT TALENT!!!!
  • September 18, 2009 - 12:31am Anonymous Says:

I think if Barbara didn't mention her cancer to the public viewer for sympathy vote, I think she could have won. The show was for "Raw Talent" and not for people having the training, lessons, and poise for the show. I am guessing.

Sharron's right. Bob Dylan, Mick Jagger, and Lou Reed do not have the "best voices", and look how popular they are. They have a certain style that most people love. Go Kevin!
  • September 17, 2009 - 11:33pm Eleanor Says:

Kevin, Don't listen to those who say you don't have talent. You will have a great show in Vegas. Sing from the heart just as you have been doing. Any one of the other performers would nervous about a Vegas show. Get some help with your finances before it slips away. Good luck and I will be in line to buy your CD's when they come out.

Kevin, congratulations. I think your songs brought tears to a lot of eyes. I would love to hear you sing the old song that the Statler Brothers recorded (To Much on My Heart). You could do a lot for that song.
