Rihanna on Chris Brown During Attack: "He Had No Soul in His Eyes"

Friday – November 06, 2009 – 10:02am

Chris Brown was "blank" and "blacked out," the night he brutally beat ex-girlfriend Rihanna, she recounts to Diane Sawyer in a new interview.

"It wasn't the same person that says I love you. It was not those ... eyes," the singer, 21, says. "He had no soul in his eyes. Just blank... He was clearly blacked out. There was no person when I looked at him."

Rihanna says Brown, 20, put her in a headlock twice and bit her on the ear and fingers on Feb. 8, the night before the Grammys, in L.A. Brown was sentenced to five years of probation, six months of community service and one year of domestic violence counseling for his actions.

Despite Brown's public apology to his ex-girlfriend -- via an Internet video -- last July, Rihanna tells Sawyer she never really forgave him.

"I just said to him, 'I can't do this.' I resented him," she says. "I always put the tough face on and try to, I can do anything face, and just try to play it off. But he knew."

She admits that she lied to him after the February incident, claiming she didn't hate him. "He kept asking me, 'You hate me, don't you?'" Rihanna says. "And I would lie and I would say, 'No, no.' And... I did hate him. Everything about him annoyed me."

Revisit Chris and Rihanna in happier times.

Of the pair's brief reunion in Miami nearly three weeks after the attack, the singer says she was blinded by love -- and admits she made a mistake.

"I went through a host of emotions," she tells Sawyer. "It was confusing for me. I was still attached by love. But I wasn't thinking about the reality of the situation."

Why speak out publicly now, two weeks before the Nov. 23 release of her third album, Rated R?

"I knew I had to do this in order to move on for me and in order for my fans to move on with me because it would always be a question in their mind," Rihanna tells ABC. "I don't want that five years from now every time they see Rihanna, they think of Chris Brown beating me. That's not who I am. It's just one thing that happened to me."

First off more than half of the people who commented on Rihanna are heartless, brainless morons. If you honestly believe that her telling her story now is for publicity then you are the most ignorant people i have ever heard of. You are being more ignorant then someone who is racists or sexists. And for the people who think she provoked him and are using that as an excuse deserve to be shunned. Whether or not she provoked him does not give him any excuse in the world to do what he did. Even if she had hit him first then that also does not make a good enough excuse. Sure if she hits him hit her back if its not rough but don't try to beat the life out of her and then threaten to take her life. It may seem almost impossible for Chris Brown to commit such a horrible act considering his music and voice are so beautiful but that shouldn't blind people to the truth and allow him to get away with it. Its is as clear as day for why she chose to come out and speak now. I'm sure every person would love to be able to heal and get over something so tragic before having to tell the world about it and having to relive it. Honestly she did not owe us any explanation at all but she was kind enough to give us one and i think all the nosey, celebrity chasers should be thankful for that. And i also believe that it is wrong for her to have to make a life changing decision to please her fans. Yes she shouldn't go back with him but that is her choice and no one else's. She is not obligated to live up to our standards or to please us when it comes to her social life. She is a performer to us not a friend or someone we truely care about so for us to tell her how dissapointed we are in her and make her feel guilty for the lives of other young girls is wrong. So this is for all the ignorant people in the world who don't care about anybody but themselves utnil something like this happens to them. You guys are selfish and heartless and need to grow a heart before you decide to publicly comment on someone elses life and emotions. Until you have to be beaten by the love of your life and then have to let them go then you can speak out about this. And if were to happen to any regular people like us then it would not be made public for the world to see. It probably would not have gotten anywhere but local news. So go through that pain and loss and embarrassment and then comment on her life and her decisions but until then keep your mouths shut and keep your emotionless comments to yourself. Gossip about it at highschool where it belongs but do not make your ignorant opinions public because they do not deserve to be heard. Only Rihanna's feelings and opinion on this deserve to be heard. Not even Chris Brown deserves to objet to this. I am very proud of her and think she is one of the strongest, most powerful woman in the world. With sincere love, Felicia

Sure her album dropping may play a role in her finally deciding to address that horrible situation between her and Chris. To timetomoveon's comment below: regardless of whether she started the fight or not (which I could honestly see) Chris DID NOT have to go as far as he did. Apparently, fighting between the two was ongoing. What bugs me is how Chris is handling it. Oh yeah sure, go on air and ACT like you're apologizing but then turn around and act like a pompous little #%#@#. Karma's a b i t c h and you will get what's yours Chris.

As the former wife of 80's pop star Stevie Woods, I believed each incident would be the last, but in reality, the violence only escalated through time. A victimizer will abuse every woman he's with. Love is a hard addiction to break, but you must end it before it ends your life. -Cheri Woods

  • November 06, 2009 - 4:38pm timetomoveon Says:

if she is doing this in honesty and not for album publicity then why not address the fact that she started the fight? I do not agree with the fact that she was abused and nothing can excuse it but what did she expect when she kept hitting him? Let us all move on

I am so glad that Rihanna has spoken out against that monster, Chris Brown! He can NEVER apologize enough. The black community, (except Oprah), kept making excuses for him! Unbelievable! I am SO GLAD Rihanna STOPPED the nonsense excuses! RHIANNA HATES BROWN. White folks hate his guts too.

Uh nope Rihanna, you came out about this b/c your album drops in two weeks! I'm sory about what you went thru, but bad and poor timing to speak about it now!!!
  • November 06, 2009 - 2:15pm Anonymous Says:

I am sure her timing had a lot to do w/ the album coming out and $$$. But at least she is sending the right message now. Better late than never, but how many young women have been abused or even beaten to death by their men because they went back, following her example. Or at least refused to testify against those men. Quite a few the statistic say. Also, by saying he was "blacked out" during the attack though, it is almost like she is still saying he wasn't responsible for himself and that she bought into his LK interview just like so many of his fans- that he didn't remember the attack. Just to hear Chris say just a couple of days ago, in a c o c k y manner and then sort of laugh, that his fans have stood by him but he often hears things like "Woman beater!!" from his crowd of "fans" makes me ill. He blew it off as just a few and he wasn't responsible for them not knowing who he was. I know who he is and he needs help but refuses to get the serious kind he needs.
