Chace Crawford Admits Gossip Girl Is "a Weight on My Conscience"

Chace Crawford says he can sometimes get uncomfortable with the racy undertone of his CW hit Gossip Girl.

"Is that a weight on my conscience?" Crawford says in a new interview with London's The Independent. "Well, yes, I think it is. I come from a moral background, and I can see the power of the show, and imagine my old school teachers cringing, or my grandparents thinking, 'Oh, my God,' when they see me, say, having sex on a barstool. But you have to remember, this is not a reality show. It's supposed to be pure entertainment."

He says the show isn't "making an instruction manual telling [teens] how to drink and do drugs, or have sex. We're just laying out how it is.

"My character is very conflicted, and even in the episodes where he's having sex then dumping girls, there's often regret," Crawford says of his role as preppy stud Nate Archibald. "You know, there are repercussions to certain sorts of behavior that come full circle."

Sometimes he says he'll put a limit on how much skin he'll show. Recently, he convinced producers to let him keep his shirt on.

"I never actually said I disliked having my top off; it was just that on that occasion it didn't make sense," he explains. "Nate was supposed to be waking up, hungover, on his buddy's couch. So why would he be in his boxer shorts?

"I don't actually mind taking my clothes off most of the time – it's why I go to the gym," he says. "As an actor, you pick and choose your battles."

Achieving fame so fast "can be a double-edged sword," Crawford admits. "But right now, I couldn't ask for more, and I certainly never complain about it."

He says he laughed off rumors that he and co-star Ed Westwick are having a fling. (Crawford was also romantically linked to JC Chasez, though both vehemently deny gay rumors.)

"It's kind of funny," Crawford tells the paper. "I guess some people assume there's a seed of truth to it. People think where there's smoke, there's fire."

He says he wasn't sure who started the rumors — and doesn't care.

"I just don't even want to speculate on that. It's just one of those things that rolls off my back," Crawford says. "There's not one seed of truth to it, so it'll just go away in the end."

I love it how all these people say that they come from a moral back ground and these types roles "weigh on their conscience". It doesn't weigh so heavily that it keeps them from picking up a pay check. I wish they would all just be honest with themselves for once. Its so annoying.

At least there is one celebrity that cares about his reputation. The only way to do that sort of job is exactly just that..treat it as a job and nothing more. You always hear about people having a hard time separating themselves from their character and their family doesnt barely know them anymore. At least he is trying to stay grounded and not get jaded.

I absolutely ADORE this show. That being said I'm a mature 25 year old adult. I don't have kids but I sure as hell wouldn't want my teen watching this show. So I can relate to parents on that level.

Even though it is a show about teens I really think this show is aimed at an older demographic for entertainment value only. Teens may look at this show and try to imitate their lives after it. Which is scary.

I think people should lay off of Chace and the whole Gossip Girl crew!! You don't want your children watching shows like this, but how many of you send your kids to schools where the teens act exactly the same as they do on the show. Don't condem the show for putting the truth out there!! People need to open their eyes, you can't ban shows like this to try to "Protect" your kids, cuz they are gonna see the same stuff on the streets. So I say to hell with you close minded people. Get a life and quit trying to blame TV for the way your children act. Look in the mirror if you want someone to blame for how messed up your kids are!! TV doesn't screw your kids up...you do!!

Thank you. I am not trying to ban the show. Everything changes when you have kids, but for the better. I just try to look out for their well being. We are all humans and make mistakes, however if I can protect them I will.

People whose moral conscious has been properly formed will choose not to watch shows like these. I am a very imperfect person that lives a joyful, peaceful, and exciting life minus the drama that we see on TV today. It's a basic choice. I could live a chaotic life full of bad choices but I simply choose goodness. Try it you'll love it. I never watch TV - maybe 10 hrs. a year and stay constantly busy and connected with my family, friends, community and church. Chance - you should feel guilty because you do influence young culture whether you intend to or not. While you still have a conscience that allows you to feel guilt - let it guide you to make better choices. This life is only a test for something far better or far worse - YOUR CHOICE!

Yeah, we know this crap goes on everyday with teens, BUT do we glorify it and put it on primetime television? As a parent, you have to monitor and sometimes it may be hard to control everything they see.

I can see why Chace Crawford says that Gossip Girl Is a "Weight on My Conscience, and why his former schoolteachers and grandparents could get uncomfortable watching him on Gossip Girl, and that Chace sometimes draws the limit about taking his clothes off, but he's right, you have to choose your battles, etc.

This is why I have never watched the show. The previews for episodes says it all. What is this teaching our children and young adults? It's up to us as parents to not allow this to be viewed. Such a shame.
