Fourteen hours before investigators discovered the bodies of Chris Benoit, his wife, Nancy, and their 7-year-old son, Daniel, someone updated the professional wrestler’s Wikipedia biography entry to include his wife’s death.
Benoit's page on Wikipedia, a reference site that allows users to add and edit information, was altered at 12:01 a.m. Monday, though authorities did not find the bodies until after 2 p.m. that afternoon.
The entry cited that the reason Benoit missed a match Saturday night was "stemming from the death of his wife Nancy.”
Wikipedia confirmed the time stamp’s authenticity. The entry was updated by someone using an IP address registered in Stamford, Connecticut, where World Wrestling Entertainment is based.
On Friday, an anonymous user with the same IP address confessed on WikiNews to making the changes to the entry, but explained that the edit was just a "terrible coincidence" fueled by rumors and gossip.
"I just can't believe what I wrote was actually the case, I've remained stunned and saddened over it," the alleged user wrote.
After Benoit, 40, asphyxiated his wife and son, he placed Bibles next to their bodies before hanging himself in his basement using a cable from a weight-machine.
Authorities found anabolic steroids in the wrestler’s home causing officials to wonder whether the drugs played a role in the killings, as some experts believe steroids cause paranoia, depression and violent outbursts known as "roid rage."
On Thursday, federal drug agents raided the office of Georgia doctor Dr. Phil Astin, who reportedly had prescribed testosterone to Benoit.
Hours before the raid, Astin told the Associated Press he had treated Benoit for low testosterone levels.
According to the AP, investigators were looking for Benoit's medical records to see whether he had been prescribed steroids and, if so, whether that prescription was appropriate.
As of Friday afternoon, Benoit's Wikipedia bio was blocked from users with a message: "Editing of this article by unregistered or newly registered users is currently disabled until July 8, 2007 due to vandalism."
