It must be remembered that in Britain the legal system does not work on the presumption of innocence. The burden is on the defendant and his attorney to prove innocent as opposed to the American system where the burden is on the prosecuter to prove guilt.

He was called in, gave his account, the seemed to think it was reasonable enough. So it took hours...they probably were grilling him to see if he story remained straight and the fact he is going back is probably more as a follow up after they check the facts. I have the strong feeling that if there was merrit to the case, the constabularies and police in Britain would have alot more to say on the matter.

This is crap. I am pretty strongly against domestic abuse, even if it is an unorthodox case such as this.

Some people are so incredibly retarded. They see "Christian Bale apprehended for possible assault," half-a$$ read the article, then assume that he is guilty as charged. Even if nothing comes of this legally for Bale, his image is tarnished because of the media, and the thousands of fools who don't take time to collect all of the information. It was the same way with Heath Ledger, except he was already receiving criticism because he acted in the role of a homosexual (*GASP* hes a panty-wearing, mojito-drinking, fanny bandit who will forever burn in hell for his devious ways!!!) Then the accidental overdose made him a drug addicted, panty-wearing, mojito-drinking, fanny bandit, lowlife. *sigh* Some folks' interpretational skills are simply amazing.

In West Virginia, you can get arrested for assault by saying, " I will kick your @$$" or the likes.

If you touch somebody with your finger after you have said that, you can be arrested for assault and battery.

Believe it or not, that's the law....

The days when assault and battery meant two people whooping on each other ended long ago, before political correctness came in.

I doubt there is anybody alive who has not committed modern PC style assault at least once in the past year, let alone once in their entire life.

I hope Bale gets out of his depression. Verbal assault may be his fault, but they may have been aggravated...who knows what his mom and sister did to provoke him? Plus, all those accusations on Heath Ledger, his close friend, being a drug addict is just nonsense! what a load of crap! The role of joker IS SO DEMANDING and PSYCHOLOGICALLY twisted that an actor for the role actually assumes the character's mental and behavioral patterns. Ledger couldn't sleep! He suffered from insomnia after playing the role, and nightmares, and mental strain. He may have needed sleeping pills to help him sleep. The previous joker warned Ledger about the drawbacks to playing this role, but Ledger played the role unbelievably well...it's just that...he then suffered from the drawbacks.

Female accounts of incidents certaintly are belived far far more often than male accounts (if male accounts are belived at all; very very rare). There are man beaters out there ( I am a victim ) I have a scarred face from the pops I have taken from my wife and daughter. Call me what you will. I have never never striked back; never! I could have had my wife and daughter arrested for assault, but I kept it in the family as stated in an earlier comment to this story. I am happy that Bale was released without charges.
