Chris Daughtry has hit a high note.
The American Idol finalist's band, Daughtry, sold 3.2 million copies of their self-titled debut, making it the most popular album of the year, Billboard reports.
Rounding out the top five:
• Akon, Konvicted, with 2.7 million
• Fergie, The Dutchess, with 2.4 million
• The Hannah Montana soundtrack, with 2.5 million
• Carrie Underwood, Some Hearts, with 2.3 million
The number one single of the year? Beyonce's "Irreplaceable," followed by Rihanna's "Umbrella." Both are up for Grammys.
The Police's reunion tour was named the top tour of the year, grossing at least $212 million.

Chris "finally made it" only because of that show. He may not have needed to win American Idol but he sure needed to be on it, didn't he? And if selling the most albums means you're the best artist, lord help us! All this means is that he's as marketable as Britney Spears and the Spice Girls. Face it, in this day and age selling the most albums basically means that you were marketed to sell. He was marketed because he's a good-looking guy and was on American Idol. Mass marketing doesn't equal talent, it equals mass-marketing.

That may be but that still leaves the other 1/2 of the crap for him to sound exactly like, i.e. Creed and Nickleback to name a few. He's not terrible but close your eyes and he's as interchangeable with those bands as Rhianna is with Fergie who is with Gwenn Steffanie who is with .... You get the point. Then close your eyes and again and try and tell one song from another, which is pretty tough because most of his music sounds the same. I don't hate the guy but I felt like he always came off as a bit of a jerk when he was on American Idol, like he didn't have anything to prove or to learn and if that was the case, why was he on the show in the first place?

The truth is, without American Idol, Chris Daughtry, though talented, would still be singing as an unknown in Alabama, or wherever it is he came from. For that fact alone, he should have acknowledged the show at the Grammy's. It's amazing how quickly they all forget what it was like to be a starving artist. Gratitude never goes out of style.

I agree with Pam and Anonymous 1:20. Mainstream music is just not quality compared to the lesser known artists out there. Mainstream rock has become Nickleback who plays much the same music over and over. No originality. Toned down for radio play on as many stations as possible. I don't know that Nirvana would get a chance today. I haven't heard Daughtry's full album, but the single I heard could have been done by anybody. And has. Virtually indistinguishable from 9735 other guys and bands out there. That said, of course the personality of the artist plays into why some people are fans, so I can understand some form of support.
Regardless, I'll take Jack Johnson, Regina Spektor, DMB, Velvet Revolver, Tori, Rage and others not even making music anymore over these guys listed any day. JMO.

They just want consumers to buy it. But to be fair, there is some good music out there. Problem is, you've got to weed through all the crap to find it.

I am SO sick to death of Beyonce'. When I hear her music, it makes me want to tear out my eyes. All her stuff sounds the same, it's all about some man doing her wrong, and she is always doing that same dance moves. She is so over, it's completely old. So NOT impressed. I am from Generation X, and I find music today completely manufactured and unoriginal. When a contestant from a, let's face it - it is what it is - a gameshow has the #1 album and it only sold 3.2 million copies, it's apparent the music industry is dying.
And yes, I do find myself echoing my parents when they would say - you know, music these days is not what it used to be. But it's true!!!
You want a #1 album - put a video on You Tube and you may get yourself a career in the music business.
