Ellen DeGeneres called into Ryan Seacrest's L.A. radio talk show Tuesday morning with more on the continuing saga of Iggy, the adopted pooch she gave to her hairdresser when she discovered he was a bad fit for her and girlfriend Portia de Rossi. The dog was eventually reclaimed by the adoption agency, Mutts & Moms, because DeGeneres did not follow their agency's rules for finding a pet a new home.
DeGeneres tells Seacrest that while she read the Mutts & Moms contract, "In my heart, in my head, I am thinking, why would I give [the agency] one more dog to try to place when they're all in cages?...I am providing a good home for it, a loving home."
DeGeneres says she begged Mutts & Moms' Marina Baktis to visit Iggy's new home and see it for herself, but is now convinced that Baktis never had any intention of doing anything but reclaiming Iggy. "She didn't look at the house," DeGeneres says. "They were begging her...she scooped the dog up, ripped the tags off its neck, and said 'this is my dog'...[de Rossi and I] rushed over there...thinking we'll just go get the dog so she can't steal it from them, and we were five minutes too late. She was running down the street with the dog in her arms when she found out we were on our way."
Iggy has now been placed with another family, DeGeneres confirms. She says of Baktis’ actions, “it's never been about the dog, it's about punishing me."
Ellen's hairdresser's family spoke to Inside Edition today, and said that while Baktis doesn't deserve the death threats she has been getting over Iggy's adoption, they would like the chance to prove they'd be good owners. Hairdresser Cheryl tells Inside Edition, "There was not a reason in the world that [Baktis] could say, my children didn't get along with the dog, my dog didn't get along with the dog, that my home wasn't appropriate. She didn't ever look at the house."
Her 12-year-old daughter Ruby adds, "I love Iggy...Iggy was a part of my family, even after two weeks...I just want him back so so badly."
The New York Post reported this morning that Keith Fink, attorney for Mutts & Moms, says DeGeneres' sob story is all an act. "She is using her power and access to the media to destroy this agency," he told the paper. And according to TMZ, Baktis has had to file a police report in response to the threats she has received since DeGeneres went public with the story.
Baktis told Inside Edition, "I’ve been crying a lot too. If Ellen and Portia did what they were supposed to do, a little girl wouldn’t be crying."
Nonetheless, 83% of Usmagazine.com readers think that Iggy should be returned to the family DeGeneres gave him to. Maybe then we'd see some tears of joy in this story?
