Adele, James Corden’s Carpool Karaoke Filming Lasted Two Hours: ‘We Could’ve Made an Entire Episode of It’

Nothing compares! Though there have been plenty of A-listers sharing a car with The Late Late Show host James Corden, arguably the biggest name yet has been that of Adele. The British chart-topper, 27, joined the late-show host, 37, for a memorable installment of his segment Carpool Karaoke on Wednesday, January 13.

Executive producer Ben Winston talked to Vulture about how the show landed such an incredible talent. Noting that Adele’s team wasn’t interested in an appearance before her album came out, Winston revealed that they approached her after 25 was released in November.

“Instantly, they came back and said, ‘Yep. We did. We’re doing it. What would you like to do?’ We said we’d love to do Carpool, and amazingly, they replied, saying, ‘OK. December 21, 12:30 at this address. Does this work for you?’ I was like, ‘Oh my God, that can’t be right. Has someone hacked my email?'” he recalled.

And though they had allotted an hour of time to film the almost 15-minute segment, Winston added that Adele had no problem extending it for “a couple of hours.”

“She was having a great time, and James was having a great time,” he said. “She’s a remarkable woman. She is the biggest star, I would say, in the world right now. But yet she’s the most down-to-earth, lovely girl you could meet. You sometimes wonder if success will change someone, but it wasn’t with her. She’s as wonderful as you would hope she would be.”

By the time they had the usable footage pared down, it equated to 54 minutes.

“We could’ve made an entire episode of it,” he admitted but added that they decided against it. “I think you’ve got to be sort of strict with yourself, and kill things that you love. There were some amazing, amazing bits in there. But we chose what we felt was the best 14, 15 minutes. … The best television always leaves you wanting more. … In the end, it was like watching two old friends have a blast.”

And though Corden certainly gets into his own performances and singing, Winston noted that the British actor and comedian is never in any real danger behind the wheel and on the road.

“Well, first of all, we don’t take routes that are difficult,” Winston revealed. “He’s also got two of our cars ahead of him, and three cars behind him — essentially, a convoy. So he’s moving at under 20 miles an hour, and we don’t let any other cars around him. The second thing is, the cameras are tiny. They’re about the size of your knuckle, and they’re [stuck on] the windshield. So it doesn’t really distract his view.”
