Same tune, different tone. Twenty years after Alanis Morissette‘s smash single “Ironic” made her a global superstar, the singer-songwriter performed the song on The Late Late Show with James Corden — with an updated rendition.
Taking to the stage in a red beanie and braids, the Grammy winner, 41, shared new lyrics that would most likely reach today’s angsty audience. She sang: “An old friend sends you a Facebook request / and you only find out they’re racist after you accept.”
Carpool Karaoke king Corden, 37, then joined in. “There’s free office cake on the first day of your diet / It’s like they announce a new iPhone the day after you buy it,” he crooned, mimicking Morissette in the same beanie and outfit.
Other lyrics included mentions about Tinder, Netflix, Snapchat, and currently popular digital platforms. “It’s like swiping left on your future soul mate / It’s a Snapchat that you wish you had saved / It’s a funny tweet that nobody faves / And who would have thought . . . It figures,” they harmonized together.
“Ironic” was one of the hits on Morissette’s smash June 1995 album, Jagged Little Pill. The Collector’s Edition version of the record was released late last month, and the songstress recently reflected back on its relevance.
“I thank sweet baby Jesus that I can actually perform these songs,” Morissette told Us Weekly and other reporters this past May at an event. “There’s timelessness to it for me that I can actually stand by these lyrics still. Thank God, because otherwise I probably wouldn’t want to.”
