In the opening scene, Liz Taylor (Denis O’Hare) is lying in bed when her throat is slit at the hands of the Countess (newly minted Golden Globe winner Lady Gaga). Say what?!

Thankfully, the death is quickly explained when we learn that Liz has been diagnosed with terminal cancer and wanted to die and be “reborn” to join her family, who already reside as ghosts in the hotel.

“You were always my fondest creation. I wanted to be here to help you transition. One last time,” the Countess tells Liz.

Then she mercifully kills Liz so she can live in the hotel forever and be with those she loves. These two have had a tumultuous relationship throughout the season thanks to Liz’s romance with the Countess’ former lover Tristan (Finn Wittrock) and Tristan’s death at the Countess’ hands.

But Tristan and Liz were reunited in the end, and he tells her that he always loved her. Swoon. Now they get to spend eternity together.
