CBS Axes 'As the World Turns' After 54 Years

The soap opera world hasn't stopped turning -- yet.
After 54 years on the air, CBS' As the World Turns will go dark in September, EW.com reports.

Following Guiding Light, it's the second soap opera that CBS has cancelled in the past three months.
After As the World Turns' finale, a mere six shows in the daytime-drama genre will be left on the networks.

"We are disappointed and saddened by the news that the show s not being renewed," executive producer Chris Goutman said in a statement. "It will certainly be a loss for all of us, and for the show’s loyal audience."

46I have watched ATWT since the 50's, CBS is going from ladies daytime shows to crap.
WHY ARE ALL THE SOAPS GETTING DROP AFTER ALL THESE YEARS YOU HAVE LOYAL FANS FOR THIS SHOW FOR 54 YEARS MY QUESTION IS JUST WHY WHATS THE DEAL
Just SO UPSET that this show is being canceled. I have watched ATWT almost from the beginning. I tape it every day so that I don't miss an episode. Very sad ;-(
I was shocked when I heard that CBS was taking my favorite soap off the air, The cast members have been like a part of my family,comming into my living room everyday sence I was a small child. My dad even came home from work at lunch to watch it.I hope they leave the Bold & the Beautiful alone,or maybe extend it to an hour. I wish another network would pick it up cause I'm gonna miss my ATWT family...
is there anything we can do to help the show stay on the air? i was crushed when "the guiding light went off!. and the bad thing is they don't put anything other soap in the place of it.
I'm sick that CBS and Proctor & Gamble have decided to cancel ATWT. I have watched this show off and on my entire life and I'm almost 60. I don't know what thought process goes into decisions like this, but this one takes the cake. It was awful when we lost GL, but now ATWT is even worse. I hate the stupid game show, Let's Make A Deal, that took the place of GL in my area. It is the worst show I've ever seen. I shut the TV off when it comes on. We'll probably get another "dumb" one to replace ATWT or worse yet, another doctor show or talk show. I am hoping there is something that can be done to save this show by CBS, Proctor & Gamble or another network. It is a true Icon of our time. I also will avoid purchasing Proctor & Gamble products as you "stuck" it to us once already..
I can't believe that CBS is doing this! My grandmother, my mother, my aunt, my recently deceased husband, myself, our daughter & sometimes our granddaughter have & do watch ATWT daily. ATWT has fine actors -- in fact, our youngest daughter was named after Kim (Hughes). Actually, this is the only soap that I watch & the only TV show that I watch on a regular basis. What a shame! Hopefully, CBS will reconsider.
As soon ATWT goes off the air so goes CBS and so goes all the products of Procter Gamble. They killed our favorite soap, and we'll get even with them. CBS sure picked a fine time to do this. Where is your Christmas spirit. Shame on you CBS, I hope you too will go out of business.

No problem. I do not watch whatever took Guiding Light's spot, won't watch what will take ATWT's spot, and I won't buy P&G products anymore. I supported P&G and daytime, I'll read instead.
Wow Jackie, you are way off! I work full time, I look forward to my favorite stories on As The World Turns that I have record during the day. Who are you to judge what is silly? I think you should get over yourself!
The beginning of the end for ATWT was when they introduced a gay couple to the story line, nothing wrong with having a gay couple, but to have them kissing, etc, just doesn't capture the interest of most people. I am not homophobic, but that is when I started losing interest in the show, also when Carly was gone for 3 months....ATWT at one time was best soap on TV....don't cancel the show....get some new writers and don't spend alot of money on travel locations.....use the sets....
Its a pity the close sendinding out the soap "as the world turns". I think CBS doesnt realise how many people worldwide are looking for many years now. Let the tv stations worldwide pay more for the soap, maybe it will cover the costs. I would like to complaine to CBS about it but doesnt know where to do it. I live in Holland and many, many people looks daily to the soap. No other soap can replace this one! Please let CBS reconsider their choice to make an end to worlds best longest running soap! As The World Turns is the best soap on daytime. Its about family and is very special, it has the best cast. CBS is making a big mistaske, I say shame on you CBS.
Actually Jackie, I am a career woman, wife and mother and watch my soap at night. It's better than these reality shows and judge shows that are really pure junk.
The soap supporters on here must be old & stay-at-home wives!Are you kidding me?Soap-operas are for silly women who live in that 'Gone With The Wind'era hoping for Rett Butler to come rescue them from their dreary lives.These soaps are foolish & outdated.They need to go.Soaps are a fictious fantasy world.What does it say about the people who love As The World Turns?WOW, it speaks volumes!
As saddened as I am to hear this I am not surprised! American's have no idea how to write Soap Opera's anymore! It's quite pathetic and dissappointing that a once great industry in Television has been reduced to this.
@Hey- im glad someone sees the real important soap! LOL!! Ive never been into the CBS soaps but i absolutley love all three of the ABC soaps!! GH OLTL and AMC- those are the real soaps!
