Video: Chris Brown Breaks Down at BET Awards

Entertainment June 28, 2010 AT 9:08AM

In his first live televised performance since assaulting Rihanna, Chris Brown broke down as he performed a tribute to the late King of Pop Michael Jackson.

Donning a fedora and sparkled glove, he mimicked Jackson's signature " Moonwalk" across the stage to "Billie Jean" at the BET Awards Sunday in Los Angeles.

But when he grabbed the mic to belt out "Man in the Mirror," Brown -- who has been outspoken about how Jackson influenced his career -- lost it.

His voice cracked and he could not sing.

Later in the night, the singer, 21, returned to the stage to accept the AOL Fandemonium Award. See more pics from the BET Awards.

He apologized to his fans.

"I let you all down before," he said, "but I won't do it again. I promise you."

Why is everyone still on Chris Brown? We all make mistakes. I am will to bet some of those who are critizing him has done a lot worse. Who are we to judge. Do anyone know why he did what he did? What did Rihanna do? only them two know what and why. They are both to blame until you really know who to blame.

I wish u all would leave Chris Brown alone. There r so many other artist how have done worst or the same and no one is on there back and their careers are not suffering. He messed up and he apologized GET OVER IT. Let God judge him not u all who have ALL done wrong in ur life. I love Chris Brown and I am a 40yr old mother of a boy and a girl. Chris is very talented and deserves to have a career just like the Rihanna's dumb tail..

@US whatever - seems you took down my first comment, for some odd reason. So of course my elaboration in the second comment makes little sense. I shouldn't be surprised at this; you're a slimy site - you started these rumors about Chris' performance in the first place (as I recall). I'm too tired to re-write all that I said - just that the young man's talent should be our focus, not that night 1.5 years ago when he utterly lost his cool, and he has been walking the straight and narrow since.

@WOW Professor, I see there are spelling and grammatical errors in what I wrote below - sorry. Can I at least get a B? And can you at least think twice about condemning CB fans because they don't write well? Get a life and listen to the music.

  • July 05, 2010 - 3:26am chianne

@WOW Your comment boarders on racism. What the hell does it matter if his fans' comments here are grammaticly correct? We are not writing collge essays. Many if his fans might not of finished college - SO WHAT?? They have the right to express their opinions - I happen to agree with their opinions. I completed graduate school, but I have the same appreciation for Chris Brown's magnificent raw talent that 'they' do. He messed up his life when he lost control during that argument (we really need to remember he was an immature 19 year-old, both of them living a pressure-cooker lives. My hear breaks when I think of that scar he will always carry, how there will always be people out there that dispise him. But I hope there are truly people also accepting him back now, and his load will lighten. Try to forgive the kid; he has learned and grown, and we should put the whole incident behind us. He has walked the straight and narrow for well over a year now.

US Weekly erased my comment about Charlie Sheen & Chris Brown. Obviously, US believes in censorship! I made some valid points about the drastic contrast in the media treatment towards Chris & Charlie. Their physical assault incidents happened 11 months apart, within the same year. On Christmas Eve Charlie Sheen physically assaulted and held his wife at knife point and threaten to take her life. Their twin baby boys and Brooke's family was in the home during the whole ordeal. Charlie Sheen hasn't been sentenced for his crime. Instead he stems to earn $40M for the final 2 seasons of 2 & 1/2 Men. He was able to spend Father's Day with his children. This man is walking around free, despite his vast criminal past. Currently, his estranged wife, Brooke, and baby boys have moved out of the family home. Brooke no longer wears her wedding ring. During another domestic violence incident, his then wife (Denise Richards) moved into a hotel with their daughter, while she was 6 months pregnant. There had to be a good reason why a woman would chose to move into a hotel, over living in her secured multi million dollar home. Kelly Price (John Travolta's wife) was once Charlie's girlfriend. He attempted to kill her during a violent argument. He tried to kill her but, instead shot her in the arm. You can see the scar on her arm. Hollywood and the LAPD allows this privileged jerk to roam free. Despite numerous evidence that proves that he has serious problems. Why doesn't the media give Charlie Sheen a hard time. How come the media doesn't question his 30 days stay in rehab. Obviously it was a PR stunt. I believe Chris' breakdown was a sincere sign of regret and remorse. If the public can forgive Charlie Sheen, then they should give Chris Brown a second chance. It has been 17 months, since the isolated incident, move on already. Rihanna has moved on and she is doing quite well. Also, Rihanna is known to have an aggressive and passionate personality, she is no wall flower. There is more to the 2009 February incident that the mainstream media chooses to conceal from the public. Honestly, how did the investigation photos get out to the public. I wish Chris and Rihanna the best, in their separate lives.

smh....that witness lying. Wen he was truly crying he could hardly even sing...it was coming from the heart....you could even tell from his body language !!!

  • July 03, 2010 - 2:15pm KeKe123

All of you people who think that Chris Brown's performance was a sham need to get your eyes examined!! That was the best tribute to THE King Of Pop ever!!! Sure Chris had a moment with Rihanna, and what happened was totally wrong. No man or woman should hit the other for any reason. I do not care what transpired. Chris Brown is the next MJ. It is his destiny. So Chris if you read this just know that I support you 100%. You are a great singer and performer, and I am glad to see you back to doing what you love. God bless you. Don't worry about those haters b/c that is just what they are. Love you!!!!

  • July 03, 2010 - 4:06am WOW

Chris needs to stick to singing because his acting is terrible! If I were Chris, I would be embarrased about the intelligence level of his fans that are posting comments on his behalf! LOL... Tilia, Lizzy and Real and many others! LMAO Go back to 4th grade and learn how to use the English language! Do any of you even know how to use the proper tense of a word? (or even know what proper tense means) ex. "I think he did NOT put eye drops this was straight up REAL he pour his heart out and for all who said this fake." WOW... Then there are Real's comments, "My daughter and I was crying..." TRY ~my daughter and I were crying~ & "We was screaming at the..." TRY~ We were screaming~ The best is this one from Real>> "His pass is the pass and he learn from it!" TRY~ His past is the past and he learned from it!!! That is just a few of the best! Anyone reading these comments can tell that ~most, not all~ the people that are on Chris' side are ignorant and uneducated. You can tell just by their posted comments and their use of words! Most of the people who think that Chris was full of s*** and faking it seem to be a lot more educated. They can at least type in full sentences, use proper word tense, spell, and write a sentence using the English language properly! If Chris reads these he will be embarrased that his fan base is filled with the type of people that have posted on here! :~) :~)

if he used eye drops, his eyes would have just been watering; his voice wouldn't have sounded that way. people are stupid & blowing things way outta proportion.

  • July 02, 2010 - 7:56pm Adriane

He was really crying! The song was much more of the reason why he was crying. It was not just that Michael Jackson was his idol. I hate that people hate so much when they take things that are so obviolsly real and try to twist them into false stories!

  • July 02, 2010 - 7:50pm julie

ok,I was going to leave a comment about the chris brown performance, but just a comment much more deserving of a response. The total IDIOT (talia and lizzy) who said "this whole thing is rhianna's fault". Really? are you that stupid? it's people like you who blame the woman who was beat by a loser that helps domestic abuse continue to exist.Hopefully, Chris Brown does not share your opinion and realizes it WAS HIS fault alone, and his tears were real. then he can help educate dummys like you and help put an end to a very unfortunate situation that a lot of women have to endure.

  • July 02, 2010 - 7:41pm Hope Eknoian

Best acting award should go to him. what a scene. Of coarse Chris wasn''t crying. ACTING.

  • July 02, 2010 - 7:25pm Whatever

Who cares? I mean, really. They're fake, they're not fake. Does it even really matter?

  • July 02, 2010 - 7:02pm mae

i do think the tears were real

  • July 02, 2010 - 6:12pm brenda hastings

It is so pitiful that the world is so ful of fakes that when someone shows their true emotions no one believes it.
