Double-0-backtrack. After Daniel Craig recently said he'd rather "slash [his] wrists" than play James Bond in another 007 movie — provoking a talked-about critical tweet from Ellen Pompeo — his Spectre costar Naomie Harris downplayed the actor's controversial comments in a new interview.
Harris, 39, told BBC News on Tuesday, Oct. 13, that Craig was "just being sarcastic" and that his recent interview with Time Out London was "blown out of proportion."
"Daniel lives and breathes Bond," said Harris, who plays Moneypenny in the franchise. "It was not as he intended it… [his] sense of humor… doesn't come across particularly well in print."
In fact, Harris said Craig, 47, is devoted to his character, whom he's now played in four Bond movies. "He's so dedicated to his craft and he loves playing Bond," she continued. "It's easy to take something that someone says in passing and blow it completely out of proportion. I think that's what's happened here, so I don't really believe those comments at all."
In the interview, Craig was asked whether he wanted to do another Bond flick in the near future. “Now? I’d rather break this glass and slash my wrists,” he replied to Time Out. “No, not at the moment. Not at all. That’s fine. I’m over it at the moment. We’re done. All I want to do is move on.”
While Harris was quick to downplay her costar's comments, Grey's Anatomy actress Pompeo made headlines after scolding Craig via social media for his remarks.
“This dude needs a reality check,” the Grey’s Anatomy star wrote on Oct. 8, linking to the piece of Craig's interview.
