After seven seasons on ABC's Dancing With the Stars, pro competitor Derek Hough is taking some time away from the ballroom.
Though the three-time champ -- who most recently appeared on the series with Jennifer Grey -- will sit out DWTS' 12th season when it premieres this spring, a rep for Hough says the dancer will return to the show next fall.
Hough is making good use of his hiatus, however.
The 25-year-old is set to appear in the lead role in the upcoming dance flick Cobu 3D.
Deadline.com reports Hough will appear in the Romeo and Juliet-esque film opposite South Korean pop star BoA, who will play Hough's love interest from a rival dance group.
As Hough prepares for his feature film debut, his colleagues at DWTS send him off with their best wishes.
"We wish Derek the best as he takes time off from Dancing With the Stars to pursue his film career and look forward to having him return to the show in the Fall," the show's executive producer Conrad Green tells UsMagazine.com in a statement.
Dancing With the Stars premieres on ABC in March.
