Angelina Jolie is transforming into one of the most iconic Disney villains ever -- Maleficent, the baddie in Sleeping Beauty -- and Disney has released the very first image of the 37-year-old superstar in costume.
In a striking shot, the Oscar-winning actress dons Maleficent's unforgettably sinister horns, her world-famous cheekbones and lips even more striking than usual.
A retelling of the 1959 animated classic (based on a well-known fairy tale), production finally began on Maleficent in England's Pinewood Studios June 13; the flick "reveals the events that hardened her heart and drove her to curse the baby, Aurora," a press release explains.
Starring opposite Jolie as Aurora/Sleeping Beauty herself is Elle Fanning, the star of Super 8 and younger sister of Dakota.
"It's a really great script. I'm having a lot of fun. I've already got my horns fitted," Jolie said of the role in March. "My kids are very happy."
"It's not anti-princess, but it's the first time they're looking at this epic woman [in a different way]," she explained of the new take on the story.
"I hope in the end you see a woman who is capable of being many things, and just because she protects herself and is aggressive, it doesn't mean she can't have other [warmer] qualities," Jolie added. "You have to figure out the puzzle of what she is."
