‘Game of Thrones’ Season 7 Is Coming Later Than You Think: Get the Depressing Details!

The waiting game! Game of Thrones fans may momentarily consider hurling themselves out of the nearest window after learning this news, as cocreators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss revealed in a recent interview that the widely popular HBO show’s season 7 will start filming later than expected.

The producers told UFC Unfiltered hosts Jim Norton and Matt Serra in a podcast released on Tuesday, July 5, that the the start of the new season is getting delayed because scenes need to be shot in colder weather.

“We don’t have an air date yet, but this year will probably be a little bit later,” the pair said. “We’re starting a bit later because at the end of this season, ‘Winter is here’ — and that means that sunny weather doesn’t really serve our purposes any more. So we kind of pushed everything down the line, so we could get some grim, gray weather even in the sunnier places that we shoot.”

Game of Thrones seasons typically launch in March or April, with season 6 starting on April 24, 2016, which was the latest date for a season premiere yet.

Benioff and Weiss had previously revealed in an interview last month that their plan for the show is to air no more than 15 additional episodes that will take place over the course of two seasons. That would make the remaining seasons shorter than the previous ones, which have consisted of 10 episodes.

Fans definitely have a lot to think about until the Emmy-winning drama returns. The show’s season 6 finale aired June 26 and included new details about the parents of Jon Snow (Kit Harington), along with teasing a potential showdown between newly crowned Cersei (Lena Headey) and the journeying Daenerys (Emilia Clarke).
