‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Season 13 Premiere Recap: Meredith Bonds With Alex in Jail

Maybe they should have stayed to catch the bouquet? In Grey’s Anatomy‘s season 13 premiere on Thursday, September 22, Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd) and Amelia Shepherd (Caterina Scorsone) had just gotten married, but everyone left to deal with Alex Karev (Justin Chambers) and Andrew DeLuca (Giacomo Gianniotti) fighting over a misunderstanding with Jo Wilson (Camilla Luddington).

While the doctors waited to see if DeLuca would be able to see again, Jo struggled to be honest about her past, Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) juggled two major secrets, and Jackson Avery (Jesse Williams) and April Kepner (Sarah Drew) seemed to have made peace upon the arrival of their baby girl.

Just Wait and See

As Us Weekly previously reported, the series premiere picked up right where the finale left off: with DeLuca en route to Grey-Sloan Memorial, bleeding and barely conscious. The twist: Alex was the one who accompanied him there. The doctors asked Alex, who had a bloody hand, what happened, but he remained silent.

Meredith and Richard Webber (James Pickens) went to Jo’s apartment, where Meredith quickly figured out what happened, and left abruptly to go to the hospital, still in her gown from the wedding. After debating whether to turn Alex in, Meredith gave him his alibi: “You slipped in the rain. That’s how you hurt your hand.”

At her apartment, Jo talked to Webber through black mascara–stained tears that would put 2008 Lauren Conrad to shame. After a few minutes, Jo remembered she told DeLuca that she’s secretly married and ran to the hospital to talk to him.

When she arrived, Jo tried to tell Alex what really happened, but he cut her off, saying he “should have known better” than to want to marry her. Jo told Stephanie Edwards (Jerrika Hinton) what occurred between the three of them the night before, and because gossip and gauze seem to go hand in hand at Grey-Sloan Memorial, Edwards told Meredith the truth. After lying to the other doctors, including Maggie Pierce (Kelly McCreary), about what happened to DeLuca, Meredith explained the misunderstanding to Alex. Alex attempted to apologize to DeLuca, but the injured doctor panicked and screamed until Alex left. He turned himself in to the police and was taken to jail, where Meredith went to bail him out.

Three’s a Crowd

Before everyone learned about the fight, they were all enjoying themselves at Owen and Amelia’s wedding. Nathan Riggs (Martin Henderson), appropriately dressed in jeans and a T-shirt, smoothly chatted up Meredith in a corner for all of three minutes before asking her to leave with him. They were interrupted by Maggie, who revealed to Meredith her feelings for Riggs in the season 12 finale. Meredith told Riggs that they had a problem, but quickly left the reception when she got a panicked call from Jo, telling her about DeLuca and Alex.

At the hospital, Riggs told Maggie he thought she was still with DeLuca, to which she responded that they broke up. “Not that it couldn’t work at work with work people,” she smoothly explained. “I think it can. With the right work people.” It’s like she was trying to tell him something.

Later, Maggie questioned herself and asked Meredith if she was being stupid by chasing after Riggs when DeLuca had been there all along. Right on cue, Riggs came in and told Maggie that he hoped everything works out with her and DeLuca. That’s just what you want to hear from your crush, right?

After finding out that Meredith knew Alex beat up DeLuca, Maggie confronted her and told her to never lie to her again. The doorbell interrupted them and, of course, it was Riggs, demanding to know what the problem was between him and Meredith. “Someone is going to get hurt,” she said. “Not you.” After telling him that she didn’t share his feelings, she went back inside the house to Maggie.

On the Mend

After what may have been the most painful labor of all time, April woke up to Jackson’s mother, Katherine Avery (Debbie Allen), holding her baby girl, Harriet. “Tubman,” April explained. “Also the spy.” Just as the two women seemed to have made peace, Katherine said the baby’s full name, Harriet Avery, to which April responded, “Who said her name was Avery?” After a heated debate between the two, Jackson came in and revealed that that the baby would have both last names, Kepner-Avery. We’re not sure what’s in store for this tumultuous former couple, but a hyphenated name for their baby seems like a good place to start.
