"We really deal with the trauma of it all, and everybody has to essentially try out again and prove that they're worthy, that we're all worthy of going back into surgery," Williams, 29, tells UsMagazine.com. "We have to go back and put people's lives in our hands, literally."

Though Dr. Karev and Dr. Shepherd survived the shooting, Williams– who will appear in What Holds the Future? at Colonial Williamsburg in Virginia Saturday — says it'll take some time before things go back to normal.

"Everybody's kind of trying to get their feet back under them," he says. "I think that the shooting also brought several kind of groups of people closer together."

"There's a wedding, and it's just kind of sudden for everybody," he tells Us. "But I think when people have gone through something really heavy, you kind of let everybody just be. You don't get too involved or question it…life is short. Let's do what we want, when we want, and see what happens."

The seventh season of Grey's Anatomy premieres tonight at 9/8c on ABC.
