Perhaps vinyl really is dead after all. In the final twist for Vinyl’s turbulent run, HBO is canceling the music-themed drama series, despite having previously picked it up for a second season.

“After careful consideration, we have decided not to proceed with a second season of Vinyl,” HBO said in a statement. “Obviously, this was not an easy decision. We have enormous respect for the creative team and cast for their hard work and passion on this project.”

The series boasted an impressive pedigree behind the camera, with such legendary figures as Martin Scorsese and Mick Jagger credited as cocreators. The show was set in the 1970s and starred Bobby Cannavale as Richie Finestra, a record executive trying to revive his American Century label. Olivia Wilde, Juno Temple and Ray Romano rounded out the cast.

HBO had picked up a second season in February, after only the pilot had aired. But the series has struggled since then, as ratings were unimpressive. It wrapped its 10-episode first season in April, and showrunner Terence Winter (Boardwalk Empire) left the show later that month.

The news is particularly tough for fans given that the season 1 finale ended with a cliffhanger. Richie found himself in serious jeopardy following his involvement in a murder, along with bilking his company out of huge sums of money.

The decision to drop the show comes as HBO has struggled recently to launch a hit drama series on par with Game of Thrones, which airs its season 6 finale Sunday, June 26. HBO Programming president Michael Lombardo exited in May after 33 years with the company.
