Mother doesn’t always know best. In a preview for Lifetime’s new series The Mother/Daughter Experiment: Celebrity Edition, Heidi Montag tearfully tells her mom, Darlene Egelhoff, how her feelings were hurt after Egelhoff criticized her much-publicized plastic surgery during her days on The Hills.
After Montag, 29, underwent a 10-part plastic surgery overhaul in 2010, she debuted her shocking cosmetic changes to her mother in a tense scene on season 6 of The Hills. As fans of the MTV series will remember, Egelhoff was none too pleased about her daughter’s physical transformation. “I felt that you were much more beautiful before,” she coldly told Montag at the time, which resulted in a years-long strained relationship between the two.
On their latest reality TV endeavor, the mother-daughter duo rehash the painful moment — and Montag’s mom is finally apologizing for her harsh words.
“I was just desperate to communicate with her in any way, and I just thought that was the only way I could do it,” Egelhoff admits during a therapy session in the Tuesday, March 1 premiere, as seen in the video above. “I would do anything to be able to take that back.”
Through sobs, the wife of Spencer Pratt responds: “It honestly felt like you ripped my heart out of my soul when I needed you so badly.”
“I’m so sorry,” a contrite Egelhoff tells Montag. “And I don’t want you to be responsible for my feelings. This is a good, healthy pain that I’m feeling. This is part of the process because we haven’t addressed this.”
The Mother/Daughter Experiment: Celebrity Edition premieres on Lifetime on Tuesday, March 1, at 10 p.m. EST.
